The vehicle inspection is the mandatory appointment every driver dreads. Yet with a little preparation and regular maintenance tracking, you can get through it stress-free and without a re-test.
When is it due?
For a private vehicle, the first inspection must be carried out within 6 months before the 4th anniversary of the vehicle's registration. After that, it must be renewed every 2 years. The deadline is indicated on the registration certificate. Important: when selling, the inspection must be less than 6 months old. If you are selling your car, get it done before publishing your listing.
The 133 check points
The inspector examines 133 points across 10 categories: vehicle identification, braking, steering, visibility, lighting, road contact (tyres, suspension), structure and bodywork, safety equipment, nuisances (noise, emissions), and mechanical components. A critical defect means you are banned from driving. A major defect means a re-test within 2 months. A minor defect requires repair but no re-test.
How to avoid a re-test
Most re-tests could be avoided with regular maintenance. The most common causes: worn or under-inflated tyres, faulty or misaligned lights, worn brakes, excessive emissions (often due to a missed oil change or a clogged filter), and ineffective wiper blades. Check these points one week before the test, and you will save the 80 EUR cost of a re-test.
With AutoKarnet, track all your services and set a reminder 2 months before your inspection deadline. You will have time to carry out any necessary repairs and approach it with confidence.
