Why oil changes are essential
Engine oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. It lubricates moving parts to reduce friction, cools the engine by carrying away heat, cleans impurities and protects against corrosion. Over time and with mileage, it degrades: it loses its viscosity, becomes clogged with metal particles and combustion residue, and can no longer perform its role properly. Worn oil leads to premature engine wear, higher fuel consumption, and eventually engine failure that can cost thousands of euros to repair. That's why regular oil changes are the single most important maintenance task for your engine's longevity.
How often?
The general recommendation is to change your oil every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometers or once a year, whichever comes first. However, this frequency varies depending on your engine type, the vehicle's age, and your driving style. Modern petrol engines using quality synthetic oil can go 15,000 to 20,000 km. Modern diesel engines equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) need more frequent changes, typically every 10,000 km, to prevent oil dilution by fuel. If you do a lot of city driving (short trips, frequent stops), reduce the interval by 20 to 30%. Always check your vehicle's service manual — the manufacturer's recommendation takes precedence over general rules.
Signs an oil change is needed
Several symptoms indicate an urgent need for an oil change. The oil warning light on your dashboard is the most obvious signal — pull over as soon as possible. Louder engine noise than usual, knocking or tapping sounds at idle suggest a lack of lubrication. Black or bluish exhaust smoke can mean the oil is degraded or being burned by the engine. Unexplained increased fuel consumption is another sign: a poorly lubricated engine uses more fuel. Finally, check the oil visually with the dipstick: if it's black, thick or grainy, an oil change is essential. Don't delay — driving with worn oil can damage your engine irreparably.
