What distinguishes this version

1,998 cc four-cylinder petrol turbo (ADAC engine code B48A20H), 9.5:1 compression: 221 kW (300 hp) between 5,750 and 6,500 rpm and 400 Nm between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm. BMW cites a strengthened crankshaft drive, optimised oil supply to the cooling-duct pistons and new main bearing shells. Seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch gearbox with an integrated mechanical front differential lock; xDrive via a power take-off and an on-demand clutch to the rear axle. Standard: Adaptive M suspension, sport steering, four-piston fixed front callipers. BMW quotes 4.9 s for 0–100 km/h and 250 km/h; WLTP combined consumption at launch 8.1–7.6 l/100 km (184–173 g/km CO2), Euro 6e. Timing chain according to ADAC.

Engine oil: quantity and approvals

Oil change: 5.25 l according to BMW’s 06/2024 specification sheet (“oil change amount”). For top-ups the handbook lists BMW Longlife-12 FE, Longlife-17 FE+ or Longlife-19 FE, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30 (if unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2, C3 or C5), with no additives. The level is measured electronically: it is monitored while driving (a value is available after about 30 minutes of normal driving), and a detailed measurement is started with the car level, engine warm and selector in N or P, under Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Engine oil level › Oil level measurement. The handbook advises running it after every refuelling. Only add oil when the car asks for it, by the quantity given in the message.

What the service display tracks

The car calculates each due date from how it is used (Condition Based Service) and briefly shows the next date or remaining distance after switching on; details, including statutory inspections, are under Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Service. BMW’s regular maintenance covers engine oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, air filter, cabin microfilter and spark plugs. Some items depend on time, such as replacing fluids: have the workshop update them. Neither the handbook nor BMW’s list sets a mileage or period: the dates are the ones your car displays.

Prepare the next service

Check the first-registration date and the power on the registration document (221 kW). Note the items and dates shown under Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Service. Give the service advisor the key the car was last driven with: the car stores its service data in it. Ask for 5.25 l of a BMW-approved oil, then check that the work is entered in the electronic Service History, which replaces the printed service booklet and can be viewed by a later owner.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil — petrol

Due date calculated by CBS

Oil change at the date the car displays; do not run past it. Top-up: BMW Longlife-12 FE, Longlife-17 FE+ or Longlife-19 FE, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30. If unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2, C3 or C5. No additives. Only add the quantity the car’s message asks for.

Other maintenance items — petrol

As the service requirement dictates

BMW lists as regular maintenance: brake fluid, a vehicle check to BMW specifications, air filter, cabin microfilter and spark plugs. Each item is triggered by the service requirement the car calculates.

Time-based items

Calendar-based (CBS)

Some maintenance items depend on time, for example replacing operating fluids. The F70 handbook states that periods with the battery disconnected are taken into account; have the workshop update these items. The handbook gives no period.

Questions about this version (5)

Why does BMW publish several consumption figures?

The June 2024 spec sheet gives 8.1–7.6 l/100 km WLTP combined. Later releases quote a single value: 8.3 l/100 km (188 g/km) in summer 2025, then 8.2 l/100 km (185 g/km, WLTP combined under Germany’s EnVKV rules) in January 2026.

Is there a 317 hp version?

BMW mentions up to 233 kW (317 hp) “in selected markets”. The European (ACEA) spec sheet and ADAC give 221 kW (300 hp): that is the output of cars sold in Europe.

Which fuel?

The handbook specifies Super Plus RON 98 for the M Performance model; the minimum is RON 91, with possible knocking and noticeable changes in driving behaviour and noise. Ethanol is allowed up to 25% (E10, E25). BMW’s published performance and consumption refer to RON 98 E10.

Can Launch Control be used on a new car?

No: the handbook rules out Launch Control while running in. Up to 2,000 km, stay below 4,500 rpm and 160 km/h, with no full load or kick-down; new tyres need 300 km of restraint, the brakes about 500 km.

What does the M Technology Package include?

Offered from November 2024 for the M135 xDrive only: stronger piston rods in the front dampers, aluminium anti-roll bars, extra underbody bracing, M Compound brakes and 19-inch M forged wheels on sport tyres (track tyres optional), with specific steering and control-system calibration.
