The 105 kW (143 PS) 318d uses the N47. This page covers 2008–2012. N47 four-cylinder diesel. The timing drive is at the rear of the engine; a scraping noise warrants diagnosis before booking a repair. The 163 PS 320d EfficientDynamics Edition is distinct from the earlier M47 320d with the same power. The 318d keeps 105 kW but changes from 300 Nm in the 2008 sheet to 320 Nm in 2010. N47 is retained as the family code; confirm component suffixes by VIN.
Figures apply to the cited configuration and market; equipment and transmissions may vary by production date.

Documented oil-change quantity: 5.2 l. Check the level after filling; this is not a top-up quantity. BMW requires Longlife-04 for diesels with a particulate filter to limit ash accumulation.
Oil service depends on fuel used, with a 24-month limit. Starting value: 30 000 km. The initial mileage is a forecast, not a guaranteed interval. Front and rear pads have separate wear-based counters. Brake fluid: 24 months. Vehicle check: 60 000 km or 48 months in the European CBS bulletin. From March 2007 production: oil and filter, cabin microfilter and handbrake check at each oil service; air and fuel filters at every third oil service. Shorten these intervals for dusty conditions or poor diesel quality.
TIS documents a timing chain. The cited service operations set no chain-replacement interval; repairs require diagnosis rather than an invented mileage limit.
The ADAC 3 Series recall list includes the positive battery cable connection (May 2019), a blower regulator that can overheat (February 2021) and Takata driver airbags (including May 2026). Campaign ranges span several models: have the VIN and completed work checked; the 318d badge alone does not establish eligibility. In August 2013 AUTO BILD reported BMW’s explanation of chain scraping on N47 engines built from 2007 to 2011: tolerances and crankshaft-sprocket manufacture. It describes more extensive work on engines built before 5 January 2009. This establishes neither a universal recall nor freedom from risk for all later engines. Request cold and warm noise checks and invoices for any previous repair.
Bring the VIN, build month, 105 kW rating and N47 code. Record CBS deadlines and previous oil services; bring the key used on the last trip, which stores service data. Have the actual work entered in the service booklet and the oil specification recorded on the invoice.
