Cold, heat and long journeys don’t put the same strain on a car. Here is what to check each season, and what the rules require, so you can set off with peace of mind.
Before winter
- Winter equipment: some countries require it in winter, at least in mountain areas. In France, for example, from 1 November to 31 March, certain mountain municipalities require four winter tyres marked “3PMSF” (three-peak mountain snowflake) or snow chains or socks in the car. Check the rules wherever you will drive.
- The battery: cold reduces its capacity. If the car is slow to start in the morning, have it tested before the big freeze. See our car battery guide.
- Coolant: it also protects against freezing. Check the level with the engine cold.
- Visibility: wiper blades in good condition, winter screenwash, all lights working.
Before a long journey or the holidays
- Tyres: pressure checked cold, at the value given for a loaded car (label in the driver’s door frame or the owner’s manual), condition of the tread and sidewalls. See our tyre maintenance guide.
- Fluid levels: engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, screenwash.
- Due dates: if an oil change or a roadworthiness test falls during the holidays, do it before you leave.
- Compulsory equipment: many European countries require a high-visibility vest and a warning triangle. Check the rules of each country you drive through.
- Loading: heavy luggage at the back of the boot, nothing that can move under hard braking.
During heatwaves
- Tyre pressure is always checked cold, early in the morning: a hot tyre gives a misleading reading.
- Cooling: keep an eye on the coolant level and the temperature gauge on climbs and in traffic jams.
- Air conditioning: if it cools less well, have it checked. See our air conditioning guide.
- Never leave a child or an animal in a car parked in the sun, even for a few minutes: the cabin heats up very quickly.
Back to routine in autumn
- After the long summer drives: check tyre and brake pad wear, especially after mountain roads.
- Before the autumn rain: wipers and lights, as the days get shorter.
- Review the year’s due dates: service, roadworthiness test, and the timing belt if it is coming up.
Nothing forgotten from one season to the next
Record every check and every service in your maintenance log: AutoKarnet reminds you before the next oil change, service or roadworthiness test. For a complete check, follow our seasonal checklist, and before the test, our inspection checklist.
