What distinguishes this version
2,998 cc six-cylinder with twin-scroll turbo, direct injection, VALVETRONIC and double VANOS (B58, B58B30A at ADAC): 250 kW at 5,500 rpm and 500 Nm from 1,520 to 4,500 rpm. Six-speed manual or eight-speed Steptronic Sport; the M140i xDrive is automatic only. BMW: 4.8 s (automatic 4.6 s, xDrive 4.4 s), 250 km/h, 7.8 l/100 km (7.1; xDrive 7.4).
Engine oil: quantity and approval
Oil change: 6.5 l according to BMW’s specification table valid from July 2017 (“oil change volume”). Approval: the 2019 chart of Original BMW engine oils published by a BMW dealer lists, for BMW’s modular petrol engines (B38, B48 and B58, the “Bx8” family in BMW training documents) from model year 2014: BMW Longlife-04 (SAE 5W-30 or 0W-30), Longlife-12 FE (0W-30) and Longlife-17 FE+ (0W-20). The chart itself refers to the owner’s handbook for the binding approval and quantity: check yours. BMW’s B58 training document (North American edition, 2015) states BMW Longlife-01 and Longlife-04.
Timing drive
Chain (ADAC: “Steuerkette”). According to BMW’s B58 training document the chain drive sits on the transmission side, in two parts (lower and upper timing chains), with a separate chain for the oil pump. No scheduled replacement in the documents consulted.
Prepare the next service
Before the appointment, note 6.5 l of oil at the change and the approval printed in your handbook. Also note the build month (registration document or VIN plate): it decides which recalls can apply. ADAC lists a BMW recall of October 2025 for cars built 09/2015–09/2021: water can get into the starter relay, with a fire risk; remedy: new starter. Another, of September 2024, covers cars built 01/2016–12/2017: driver airbag gas generator, airbag replaced. Have BMW or the workshop check your VIN. We found no BMW document giving numbered service values for this phase: ask the workshop to print the due items the car displays (oil, brakes, brake fluid, vehicle check), and do not carry over the intervals BMW published for the E87.

Questions about this version (5)
What changes compared with the M135i?
A new-generation engine: +10 kW (250 against 240 kW) and 500 Nm against 450 Nm. BMW quotes up to 0.3 s quicker from 0 to 100 km/h and up to 7 per cent lower consumption in the EU cycle.
How much oil?
6.5 l at an oil change for both the M140i and the M140i xDrive (BMW’s July 2017 table): the same quantity BMW gave for the M135i in 2015.
Which oil approvals?
BMW’s B58 training document (North American edition, April 2015) states BMW Longlife-01 and Longlife-04. The 2019 chart of Original BMW oils lists Longlife-04, Longlife-12 FE and Longlife-17 FE+ for the modular engines. Check your car’s handbook, which is the binding reference.
Where is the timing chain?
On the transmission side: BMW’s B58 training document places it there, the transmission’s inertia reducing vibration and loads on the chain. It is in two parts, with a separate oil pump chain.
