BMW 118i F20/F21 · 136 PS (2015, N13)
The facelifted 118i started with the four-cylinder N13 for a few months: from July 2015 BMW fitted a three-cylinder with the same 100 kW. Check the build month and the displacement before ordering oil or parts.

What distinguishes this version
1,598 cc four-cylinder turbo petrol carried over from the previous phase (N13 in BMW’s parts catalogue, N13B16A at ADAC): 100 kW at 4,400–6,450 rpm and 220 Nm from 1,350 to 4,300 rpm, six-speed manual or eight-speed Steptronic. BMW’s January 2015 table: 8.5 s (automatic 8.7 s), 210 km/h, 5.4 l/100 km. ADAC lists it only from 03/2015 to 05/2015.
Engine oil: quantity and approval
Oil change: 4.2 l according to BMW’s January 2015 specification table (“oil change” quantity). The N13 has no permanent oil level monitoring: the level is checked with the dipstick, BMW’s training document states. Approval: the 2019 chart of Original BMW engine oils published by a BMW dealer lists, for other petrol engines from model year 2002, BMW Longlife-04 (SAE 5W-30 or 0W-30) and Longlife-12 FE (0W-30); Longlife-17 FE+ appears only for the modular engines and the N20. The chart refers to the owner’s handbook for the binding approval.
Timing drive
Chain: BMW’s N13 training document shows a primary chain to the camshafts and a secondary chain driving the oil pump, with tensioner and guide rails. No scheduled replacement in the documents consulted.
Prepare the next service
Before the appointment, note 4.2 l of oil at the change and the approval printed in your handbook. Also note the build month (registration document or VIN plate): it decides which recalls can apply. Have BMW or the workshop check your VIN. We found no BMW document giving numbered service values for this phase: ask the workshop to print the due items the car displays (oil, brakes, brake fluid, vehicle check), and do not carry over the intervals BMW published for the E87.

Questions about this version (5)
Does my 118i have the N13 or the three-cylinder?
Date first: ADAC lists the N13 version from 03/2015 to 05/2015 and the three-cylinder from 07/2015, BMW having announced the switch for July 2015. Then the displacement on the registration document: 1,598 cc for the N13, 1,499 cc for the three-cylinder.
Why 4.2 l of oil when the pre-facelift N13 took 4.7 l?
BMW’s January 2015 table prints 4.2 l for the 118i and 120i, while BMW’s 2011 sheets gave 4.7 l for the N13 116i and 118i. The BMW documents consulted do not explain the gap: check the level on the dipstick after filling.
Is it the engine of the pre-facelift 118i?
Same N13 family, but not the same output: the 2011–2015 118i had 125 kW and 250 Nm; this one has 100 kW and 220 Nm, the figures of the old 116i.
Is there an electronic oil level gauge?
No: BMW’s N13 training document states that the engine has no permanent oil level monitoring; the level is checked with the dipstick.

Is Longlife-17 FE+ suitable?
The 2019 chart of Original BMW oils lists it only for the modular engines and the N20; for other petrol engines from 2002, such as the N13, it gives Longlife-04 and Longlife-12 FE. The car’s handbook is the binding reference.
