What distinguishes this version

1,995 cc four-cylinder diesel (B47D20B at ADAC, B47D20T0 in BMW UK’s 2017 technical data): 165 kW and 450 Nm. Eight-speed Steptronic Sport only. Coupé 07/2017–06/2019, Convertible 07/2017–06/2019 (ADAC production dates). 0–100 km/h: Coupé 6.2 s (automatic), Convertible 6.4 s (automatic) (BMW specification tables valid from 07/2017).

Engine oil: quantity and approval

Oil change: 5.0 l (BMW specification tables valid from 07/2017; BMW UK technical data from production week 44/2017). BMW’s Coupé handbook (VI/18) states that Longlife-12 FE is not suitable for the “25d” diesels: use BMW Longlife-04, SAE 0W-20 to 5W-40; failing that, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3. No additives. The level is measured electronically; BMW asks for a detailed measurement after every refuelling.

What the service display covers

The car calculates each due date (Condition Based Service): the distance or time left appears briefly when the ignition is switched on, details are in the vehicle status menu, and the data is also stored in the key. BMW Service Inclusive lists the items it triggers: oil service with filter, vehicle check, air filter, microfilter, fuel filter and brake fluid. Brake fluid is time-based; periods with the battery disconnected are not counted, so have the workshop update it. BMW’s handbook gives no mileage for any item.

Timing drive

Chain (ADAC: “Steuerkette”). BMW’s parts catalogue for the F22 B47 splits the timing drive into a lower and an upper part, with chain, sprocket, guide rail, tensioners and an oil spray nozzle. No scheduled replacement in the documents consulted: a repair item, not maintenance.

Prepare the next service

Before the appointment, note 5.0 l of oil and an approved grade (Longlife-04 only — Longlife-12 FE is ruled out for the 25d). Hand the advisor the key last used: BMW stores the service data in it. Note the build month (registration document or VIN plate): ADAC lists the July 2019 recall for four- and six-cylinder diesels built 01/2010–12/2017 (EGR module checked, faulty parts replaced). Have BMW check your VIN. Ask for a printout of the due items: BMW gives no mileage for them.

Engine oil — 225d

Due date calculated by CBS

Oil change at the date the car displays; do not run past it. Top-up: BMW Longlife-04 only — the handbook rules out Longlife-12 FE for the “25d” diesels. SAE 0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40; if unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3. No additives.

BMW asks for a detailed measurement after every refuelling: standing, car level, engine warm and idling. Monitoring while driving gives a value after about 30 minutes. Add oil only when a message asks, in the quantity shown; do not overfill.

Coolant

Regular check, engine cold

Engine cold, level between Min and Max: marks on the side of the tank or yellow marks in the filler neck depending on the engine (loosen the cap first to release pressure). Close until it clicks with the arrows aligned, and have any loss traced. Additives: ask the workshop.
