BMW 2 Series Coupé F22 and Convertible F23 LCI (2017–2021)
Launched in July 2017, the facelift kept the engine line-up of the 2016–2017 cars and changed the lights and the dashboard. Coupé and Convertible still share engines and servicing: pick your version by the kW and the build month. ADAC dates the end of production to 2021. Figures come from BMW documents and ADAC; anything we could not verify is left out.

Facelift: how to tell
From July 2017: bi-LED headlights as standard (adaptive full-LED optional), larger outer air intakes with two horizontal bars, single-piece LED rear lights with BMW’s L shape and three new paint colours. Inside, a redesigned instrument panel with fewer joins, a high-gloss black centre stack, a sliding cover over the cupholders and chrome-edged window switches. ADAC lists this phase from 07/2017 to 07/2021; the cars are built at BMW Plant Leipzig.
Engine line-up and engine codes
Petrol: 218i 100 kW B38 three-cylinder, manual or automatic; 220i 135 kW and 230i 185 kW B48, automatic only; M240i 250 kW B58, rear-wheel drive or xDrive. Diesel: 218d 110 kW and 220d 140 kW (the Coupé also as xDrive, automatic), 225d 165 kW automatic, all B47. BMW lists nine engine variants for the Coupé and eight for the Convertible, where the M240i is the only xDrive. According to ADAC the 225d leaves the range in 2019, the 218d and 220d in 2020. Codes from BMW UK’s 2017 technical data and ADAC (ADAC’s N20B20B for the 220i contradicts BMW). The M2 (F87) is a separate BMW M model, not covered here.
Maintenance: what changed
Still no fixed mileage: the car calculates each due date (CBS), and BMW Service Inclusive lists the same items (oil service, vehicle check, air filter, microfilter, spark plugs or fuel filter, brake fluid). The 2018 Coupé handbook narrows the top-up approvals to Longlife-04 and Longlife-12 FE, SAE 0W-20 to 5W-40, and states that Longlife-12 FE is not suitable for the “25d” diesels: a 225d takes Longlife-04. It asks for a detailed oil-level measurement after every refuelling. Oil change quantities: 4.25 l (B38), 5.25 l (B48), 6.5 l (B58), 5.0 l (B47).
Convertible
The fabric top still opens on the move up to 50 km/h (BMW, 05/2017). We did not find a Convertible handbook for this phase: the 2015 edition sets the operating rules (not below −10 °C, never left wet in its compartment for more than a day) and asks for the rollover bars to be checked after any deployment.
Recalls to check
ADAC lists a BMW recall of February 2026 for cars built 05/2020–10/2024 (deposits in the starter relay, fire risk; starter replaced) and, for four- and six-cylinder diesels built up to 12/2017, the July 2019 EGR recall. Have BMW check your VIN.
