Engine oil

BMW’s published oil-change quantity is 5.0 l. This is a service quantity, not an amount to pour in as a top-up: check the level after filling. Oil approvals, timing drive and shared engine characteristics are detailed in the engine section.

Maintenance and CBS deadlines

CBS calculates deadlines from use; read distance and date under Vehicle information → Vehicle status → Service requirements. Oil, front and rear pads, brake fluid and vehicle check are separate items. This handbook does not set a universal oil mileage or a numeric brake-fluid interval here. The F32 handbook’s service table specifies oil, oil filter and air-conditioning microfilter at every oil service; diesel fuel filter and air filter at every second oil service. Shorten the fuel-filter interval for poor-quality fuel and the air-filter interval in dust. This table comes from the VI/13 handbook. For engines introduced later, confirm service counters and the VIN-specific plan before applying the same frequency.

Documented faults and recalls

ADAC notes springs or dampers requiring inspection and occasional oil leaks. Its diesel review also documents the EGR-cooler recall: an internal leak may cause a fire risk. Check affected engines, periods and completed work by VIN; this diesel recall does not automatically apply to petrol versions.

Prepare the service

Bring the VIN, build month, B47D20A code and 110 kW rating. Record CBS dates and counters, previous oil services and filter changes; bring the key used for the last journey. Have the oil and work itemised on the invoice and the service recorded. Report storage with the battery disconnected so time-based deadlines can be corrected.

BMW B47 diesel engine (2.0 l, four-cylinder)

This applies to every car fitted with the B47 engine.

What the B47 is

Inline four-cylinder diesel engine of 1,995 cc (84 mm bore, 90 mm stroke) with common-rail direct injection and turbocharging. Codes published by BMW: B47D20U0 (218d), B47D20O0 (220d) and B47D20T0 (225d) in the 2017 facelifted 2 Series; B47C20U1 (118d) and B47C20O1 (120d xDrive) in the 2019 F40 1 Series. ADAC codes the 48 V mild-hybrid version (140 kW/190 PS, 400 Nm) of the 2020 facelifted G30 520d and the 2022 G42 220d Coupé as B47D20B.

Engine oil

BMW handbooks only list oils for topping up and leave the oil change to a qualified workshop; the list depends on the handbook edition. 2 Series Active Tourer F45 handbook (II/17): BMW Longlife-04, or Longlife-12 FE for certain diesels only, in SAE 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40 or 5W-30; otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C3. F45 facelift handbook (VI/19) / 5 Series G30 handbook (VI/20): BMW Longlife-04 or -12 FE — the handbook adds that Longlife-12 FE is not suitable for the 25d, 35d, 40d and 50d diesels — in SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40 (0W-20 and 5W-20 are excluded for diesels); otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3. 1 Series F40 handbook (II/22): BMW Longlife-04 or -12 FE, in SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40; otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3. 2 Series Coupé G42 handbook (VI/22) / Active Tourer U06 handbook (X/24): BMW Longlife-12 FE or -17 FE+, in SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30 only; otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C5. No additives. Quantities published by BMW: 5 l for the B47D20U0, O0 and T0 (2017 2 Series, “filling quantity”); 5.5 l for the B47C20U1 and O1 of the F40 1 Series (oil-change quantity) and for an oil change on the G42 220d Coupé (2021). No quantity is sourced here for other installations.

Timing drive

Chain, according to ADAC. BMW’s training documents on the modular family explain that, because the crankcase is shared by petrol and diesel engines, the timing drive is two-part: a lower chain drives an intermediate shaft, which on the diesels also drives the high-pressure pump, and an upper chain drives the camshafts. The sources consulted give no replacement interval.

Recall campaign

In October 2018 BMW expanded a technical campaign on the EGR module of certain diesels: glycol leaking from the EGR cooler, combined with soot deposits, can create smouldering particles and, very rarely, melt the intake manifold or cause a fire. About 1.6 million vehicles worldwide, built August 2010 to August 2017, with periods varying by model; the module is checked and faulty parts replaced. BMW does not list engine codes, so have the VIN checked.

What changed over the years

2017: facelifted 2 Series with B47D20U0/O0/T0. 2019: B47C20 in the F40 1 Series, Euro 6d-TEMP — two turbochargers of different sizes (variable-geometry low-pressure stage, high-pressure stage integrated into the manifold), slide bearings, 2,500 bar injection, single-stage exhaust gas recirculation, particulate filter, NOx adsorption catalyst and AdBlue SCR. 2020: 48 V mild hybrid (B47D20B according to ADAC) in the facelifted 520d, Euro 6d-ISC-FCM, then in the G42 220d Coupé.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil change

Oil deadline displayed by CBS

Record remaining date and distance before work. Use the version-specific quantity and a VIN-approved oil; check the level and record the oil service once completed. The consulted document does not justify a universal fixed mileage.

Source [9]

Brake fluid

Brake-fluid service date

Read the brake-fluid deadline separately from pad wear. Compare it with the last replacement invoice; report storage with the battery disconnected before correcting service dates. Reset only completed work.

Source [9]

Vehicle check

Vehicle-check deadline, separate from oil service

Keep the CBS vehicle-check item separate from oil service. Provide service history and the key last used so the workshop can read actual requirements. An oil change alone does not prove the vehicle check was completed.
