Identity and distinguishing features

The 630d produces 210 kW (286 PS) with the 2993 cc B57D30B engine. This page covers 2020–2023. Bodies covered: Gran Turismo. Dates combine documented configurations; not every body and transmission combination was available throughout. This facelift 630d uses the 210 kW B57D30B with 48-volt assistance and no external charging. The 8 kW starter-generator is not arithmetically added to the rated output. Engine oil

BMW’s published oil-change quantity is 7.0 l. This is a service quantity, not an amount to pour in as a top-up: check the level after filling. Oil approvals, timing drive and shared engine characteristics are detailed in the engine section.

Maintenance and CBS deadlines

BMW’s 2018 maintenance booklet explains CBS items: oil and vehicle check use time and distance, brake fluid uses time and brakes depend on wear. Cabin and air filters, spark plugs or diesel fuel filter are combined with selected oil-service counters and may not appear separately on screen. Replace oil and oil filter together; obtain the associated work list using VIN, service history and CBS counter. The accessible booklet is American: its numerical intervals are not transferred to European diesels or the 48-volt facelift.

Documented faults and recalls

The consulted ADAC recall list includes facelift G32 in a starter fire-risk campaign. This does not mean every engine or every G32 is affected. Check VIN, production period and campaign completion; do not extend that scope to pre-facelift cars.

Prepare the service

Bring the VIN, build month, B57D30B code and 210 kW rating. Record CBS dates and counters, previous oil services and filter changes; bring the key used for the last journey. Have the oil and work itemised on the invoice and the service recorded. Report storage with the battery disconnected so time-based deadlines can be corrected.

BMW B57 diesel engine (3.0 l, six-cylinder)

This applies to every car fitted with the B57 engine.

What the B57 is

Inline six-cylinder diesel engine of 2,993 cc with common-rail direct injection, from the same modular family as the B47 and B58. The number of turbochargers depends on the version. ADAC gives three codes: B57D30A for the 2017 G30 530d (195 kW/265 PS, 620 Nm, Euro 6c), B57D30C for the 2016 G11 750d xDrive (four turbochargers, 294 kW/400 PS, 760 Nm) and B57D30B for the 2020 facelifted 530d (48 V mild hybrid, twin turbo, 210 kW/286 PS, 650 Nm, Euro 6d-ISC-FCM). All have SCR, a NOx storage catalyst and a particulate filter.

Engine oil

BMW handbooks only list oils for topping up and leave the oil change to a qualified workshop; the list depends on the handbook edition. 5 Series G30 handbook (VI/20): BMW Longlife-04 or -12 FE — the handbook adds that Longlife-12 FE is not suitable for the 25d, 35d, 40d and 50d diesels — in SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40 (0W-20 and 5W-20 are excluded for diesels); otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3. No additives. The Longlife-12 FE restriction names the “50d” designation, that of the four-turbo 750d (B57D30C); for a 30d the handbook allows it. No B57-specific oil-change quantity was found in the BMW sources consulted: ask the workshop for the figure for your VIN.

Timing drive

Chain, according to ADAC. BMW’s training documents on the modular family explain that, because the crankcase is shared by petrol and diesel engines, the timing drive is two-part: a lower chain drives an intermediate shaft, which on the diesels also drives the high-pressure pump, and an upper chain drives the camshafts. The sources consulted give no replacement interval.

Recall campaign

In October 2018 BMW expanded a technical campaign on the EGR module of certain diesels: glycol leaking from the EGR cooler, combined with soot deposits, can create smouldering particles and, very rarely, melt the intake manifold or cause a fire. About 1.6 million vehicles worldwide, built August 2010 to August 2017, with periods varying by model; the module is checked and faulty parts replaced. BMW does not list engine codes, so have the VIN checked.

What changed over the years

2016: four-turbo 750d xDrive, presented by BMW as the world’s most powerful six-cylinder diesel — injection above 2,500 bar, peak combustion pressure raised from 200 to 210 bar, head and crankcase castings densified by hot isostatic pressing, twin-wire arc-sprayed cylinder bores. 2017: G30 530d (B57D30A, Euro 6c). 2020: facelifted 530d as a 48 V mild hybrid (B57D30B), 210 kW and 650 Nm, Euro 6d-ISC-FCM.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil change

Oil deadline displayed by CBS

Record remaining date and distance before work. Use the version-specific quantity and a VIN-approved oil; check the level and record the oil service once completed. The consulted document does not justify a universal fixed mileage.

Source [6]

Brake fluid

Brake-fluid service date

Read the brake-fluid deadline separately from pad wear. Compare it with the last replacement invoice; report storage with the battery disconnected before correcting service dates. Reset only completed work.

Source [6]

Vehicle check

Vehicle-check deadline, separate from oil service

Keep the CBS vehicle-check item separate from oil service. Provide service history and the key last used so the workshop can read actual requirements. An oil change alone does not prove the vehicle check was completed.
