Vacation is coming and you're about to hit the road. Before loading the car, take 15 minutes for these 10 essential checks. Your safety and your family's depend on it.
1. Tire pressure and condition
Check pressure when cold (including spare tire). Recommended pressure when loaded is often higher: check the label in the door. Inspect wear and possible bulges.
2. Fluid levels
Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, washer fluid. A low level can ruin your vacation (and your engine).
3. Lighting
Check all lights: headlights, indicators, brake lights, reverse lights, fog lights. Replace any burned-out bulbs before leaving.
4. Windshield wipers
If they streak or make noise, replace them. A good wiper blade costs €15-30 and takes 2 minutes to change.
5. Air conditioning
If it's no longer cooling properly, have it recharged. Efficient A/C reduces driver fatigue.
6. Brakes
If you hear grinding or feel vibration when braking, have your pads and discs checked.
7. Battery
A battery has a lifespan of 4-5 years. If yours is reaching end of life, replace it before leaving.
8. Safety kit and warning triangle
Hi-vis vest, warning triangle, breathalyzer (where required). Make sure they're accessible in the cabin, not in the trunk.
9. Well-distributed load
Heavy luggage at the bottom, against the seatbacks. Don't exceed payload. A roof box increases fuel consumption by 15-20%.
10. Plan your breaks
A break every 2 hours. With AutoKarnet, schedule a post-trip maintenance reminder to check fluid levels after a long journey.
