BMW 114d F20/F21 · 95 PS (2012–2015)

The 114d is the entry-level diesel, launched in autumn 2012 as a three- and five-door at the same time. Despite its smaller displacement it takes the same quantity of oil as the 2.0 models.

What distinguishes this version

1,598 cc four-cylinder diesel (engine code N47N in BMW’s parts catalogue) with variable-geometry turbo and 1,600 bar common-rail injection: 70 kW at 4,000 rpm and 235 Nm from 1,500 to 2,750 rpm. Six-speed manual only. BMW quotes 12.2 s for 0–100 km/h, 185 km/h and 4.1 l/100 km.

Engine oil: quantity and approval

Oil change: 5.2 l according to BMW’s specification sheet (“oil change quantity”), like every diesel in the range. BMW-approved oil: Longlife-04, in SAE 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40 or 5W-30. If it is not available, BMW allows topping up with at most one litre of an ACEA C3 oil. No additives.

What the CBS display shows

At every oil service: oil, oil filter and cabin microfilter. At every second oil service: diesel fuel filter (sooner with poor fuel) and air filter. Front pads, rear pads, brake fluid and the vehicle check each have their own due date, calculated by the car from how it is used. BMW’s handbook gives no mileage for the oil service and no period for the brake fluid: the remaining distance or time appears briefly each time the ignition is switched on, with details in the service menu (“Service required” or INFO › SERV, depending on equipment).

Timing drive

Chain-driven: BMW’s F20 parts catalogue splits the timing drive into a lower and an upper section, with chain, sprocket, guide rail, tensioner and oil spray nozzle. No scheduled replacement appears in the documents consulted: the chain is a repair item, not maintenance.

Prepare the next service

Count oil services since the last fuel filter and air filter: both come round every second service. Give the service advisor the key the car was last driven with: BMW stores the maintenance need in it. If the battery was disconnected for a while, ask for the time-based items (brake fluid) to be updated.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil and oil filter

Due date calculated by CBS

The car calculates the due date from its operating conditions; BMW’s handbook sets no fixed mileage. Each oil service covers oil and filter, and it is the reference for the items below.

Cabin microfilter

At every oil service

On cars with air conditioning or automatic climate control, the microfilter is replaced at every oil service.

Source [11]

Diesel fuel filter

Every 2nd oil service

Diesel engines: replaced at every second oil service; BMW asks for a shorter interval where fuel quality is poor.

Source [11]

Engine air filter

Every 2nd oil service

Intake silencer element, replaced at every second oil service; shorter interval in very dusty conditions.

Front brakes

Own CBS due date

Pads replaced, pad slots cleaned, disc surface and thickness checked, then the display is reset.

Rear brakes

Own CBS due date

Same work as at the front, plus a parking brake check on a roller test bench.

Brake fluid

Calendar-based (CBS)

Counted in time, not kilometres. Periods with the battery disconnected are not counted: have the workshop update the time-based items. The handbook does not state the period.

Vehicle check

Own CBS due date

Lights, seat belts, wipers, tyres, coolant, brake lines, underbody, steering, mobility kit and a road test.

Questions about this version (5)

What displacement?

1,598 cc: the 114d uses a 1.6, whereas the 116d, 118d, 120d and 125d have a 1,995 cc 2.0.

Source : [1]

Is there an automatic?

No: BMW’s sheet lists the six-speed manual only.

Source : [1]

Since when?

The specification sheet is valid from 11/2012; BMW announced it for autumn 2012, as a three- and five-door simultaneously.

Is my car affected by the N47 timing chain noise?

The fault BMW acknowledged to AUTO BILD in August 2013 concerns N47 diesels built from 2007 to 2011; BMW blamed unfavourable tolerances and a manufacturing fault in the crankshaft sprocket, and called it an acoustic issue. The article does not mention the F20, built from September 2011. A grinding noise from the timing drive still deserves a diagnosis.

When is the fuel filter due?

At every second oil service, together with the air filter, according to BMW’s F20/F21 handbook; sooner with poor-quality diesel. The microfilter is changed at every oil service.
