BMW M135i F20/F21 · 320 PS (2012–2015)

The first M Performance 1 Series, the M135i keeps a 235 kW turbocharged straight six. It takes the most oil in the range and comes with rear-wheel drive or, from November 2012, xDrive.

What distinguishes this version

2,979 cc turbocharged straight six (engine code N55 in BMW’s parts catalogue): 235 kW at 5,800 rpm and 450 Nm with overboost. Six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. BMW quotes 5.1 s and 8.0 l/100 km for the manual, 250 km/h limited. Three- and five-door from 2012.

Engine oil: quantity and approval

Oil change: 6.5 l according to BMW’s five-door specification sheet and the three-door press kit. On the N55 the level is measured by the oil quality sensor, as on earlier BMW engines. BMW-approved oils: Longlife-01, Longlife-01 FE or Longlife-04, in SAE 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40 or 5W-30. If none is available, BMW allows topping up with at most one litre of an ACEA A3/B4 oil. No additives.

What the CBS display shows

At every oil service: oil, oil filter and cabin microfilter. At every second oil service: spark plugs and air filter. Front pads, rear pads, brake fluid and the vehicle check each have their own due date, calculated by the car from how it is used. BMW’s handbook gives no mileage for the oil service and no period for the brake fluid: the remaining distance or time appears briefly each time the ignition is switched on, with details in the service menu (“Service required” or INFO › SERV, depending on equipment).

Timing drive

Chain-driven: BMW’s N55 training documentation describes timing chains secured by the crankshaft central bolt, and the parts catalogue lists chain, rails and tensioner for the M135i. No scheduled replacement appears in the documents consulted.

Prepare the next service

Count oil services since the last spark plugs and air filter: both come round every second service. Give the service advisor the key the car was last driven with: BMW stores the maintenance need in it. If the battery was disconnected for a while, ask for the time-based items (brake fluid) to be updated.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil and oil filter

Due date calculated by CBS

The car calculates the due date from its operating conditions; BMW’s handbook sets no fixed mileage. Each oil service covers oil and filter, and it is the reference for the items below.

Cabin microfilter

At every oil service

On cars with air conditioning or automatic climate control, the microfilter is replaced at every oil service.

Source [13]

Spark plugs

Every 2nd oil service

Petrol engines: replaced at every second oil service. Keep count of oil services since the last change.

Engine air filter

Every 2nd oil service

Intake silencer element, replaced at every second oil service; shorter interval in very dusty conditions.

Front brakes

Own CBS due date

Pads replaced, pad slots cleaned, disc surface and thickness checked, then the display is reset.

Source [13]

Rear brakes

Own CBS due date

Same work as at the front, plus a parking brake check on a roller test bench.

Brake fluid

Calendar-based (CBS)

Counted in time, not kilometres. Periods with the battery disconnected are not counted: have the workshop update the time-based items. The handbook does not state the period.

Vehicle check

Own CBS due date

Lights, seat belts, wipers, tyres, coolant, brake lines, underbody, steering, mobility kit and a road test.

Questions about this version (5)

What about the M135i xDrive?

Available from November 2012, with the eight-speed automatic only: 4.7 s to 100 km/h and 7.8 l/100 km according to BMW. Our sources give no separate oil quantity for it.

Source : [4] [2]

Can it tow a trailer?

BMW’s five-door sheet lists no permitted trailer load (“– / –”) and no towbar download.

Source : [1]

Is it the same as the 326 PS M135i?

No: the 240 kW (326 PS) version belongs to the facelifted range presented in January 2015. This one has 235 kW (320 PS).

Source : [6] [1]

At what revs are the 450 Nm available?

BMW’s documents disagree: 1,250 to 5,000 rpm on the five-door sheet, 1,300 to 4,500 rpm in the three-door press kit; with overboost in both cases.

When are the spark plugs due?

At every second oil service, together with the air filter, according to BMW’s F20/F21 handbook. The microfilter is changed at every oil service.
