The 218i delivers 100 kW: Coupé from 03/2015, Convertible from 03/2015. After the July 2017 facelift it continued as the 218i, with the same engine.

1,499 cc three-cylinder petrol (B38 in BMW’s parts catalogue, B38B15A at ADAC): 100 kW and 220 Nm. Six-speed manual or eight-speed Steptronic. Coupé 03/2015–06/2017, Convertible 03/2015–06/2017 (ADAC production dates). 0–100 km/h: Coupé 8.8 s (automatic 8.9 s), Convertible 9.4 s (automatic 9.6 s) (BMW model update, spring 2015).
Oil change: 4.25 l (BMW, Convertible press kit 09/2014). BMW’s Convertible handbook (VI/15) approves for petrol engines BMW Longlife-01, Longlife-01 FE, Longlife-04, Longlife-12 FE and Longlife-14 FE+ (the last only for certain engines), SAE 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40 or 5W-30; failing that, up to 1 litre of ACEA A3/B4. No additives. The level is measured electronically; BMW asks for a check after every refuelling.
The car calculates each due date (Condition Based Service): the distance or time left appears briefly when the ignition is switched on, details are in the vehicle status menu, and the data is also stored in the key. BMW Service Inclusive lists the items it triggers: oil service with filter, vehicle check, air filter, microfilter, spark plugs and brake fluid. Brake fluid is time-based; periods with the battery disconnected are not counted, so have the workshop update it. BMW’s handbook gives no mileage for any item. Convertible: the handbook adds no scheduled work on the top, but asks you not to leave it wet or dirty in its compartment for more than a day.
Chain (ADAC: “Steuerkette”). BMW’s parts catalogue for the 218i B38 lists chain, sprocket, guide rail and tensioners; BMW’s training document for the B38/B46 engines places the two-part chain drive on the transmission side. No scheduled replacement in the documents consulted: a repair item, not maintenance.
Before the appointment, note 4.25 l of oil and an approved grade (Longlife-01, -01 FE, -04, -12 FE or -14 FE+). Hand the advisor the key last used: BMW stores the service data in it. Note the build month (registration document or VIN plate): ADAC lists a BMW recall of September 2024 for cars built 01/2016–12/2017 (driver airbag gas generator; airbag replaced). Have BMW check your VIN. Ask for a printout of the due items: BMW gives no mileage for them. Convertible: mention any fault with the top; after an emergency manual closing, BMW’s handbook asks for the top to be checked by a workshop.

Oil change at the date the car displays; do not run past it. Top-up: BMW Longlife-01, -01 FE, -04, -12 FE or -14 FE+ (the last only for certain petrol engines), SAE 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40 or 5W-30 (0W-20 and 5W-20 only for certain engines). If none is available, up to 1 litre of an ACEA A3/B4 oil. No additives.

Electronic measurement: the status is available after about 30 minutes of driving; the detailed measurement is done standing, engine warm and idling (about 1 minute). Add oil only when the message asks, in the quantity shown, within 200 km. Overfilling can damage the engine or the catalytic converter.

BMW lists as regular, CBS-triggered services: oil service with filter, vehicle check to BMW specifications, air filter, microfilter, spark plugs and brake fluid. No mileage is given for any of them.

Counted in time, not kilometres. Periods with the battery disconnected are not counted: have the workshop update the time-based items (brake fluid, and where applicable oil and microfilter). The handbook does not state the period.

Level between the Min and Max marks on the expansion tank, engine cold; the tank is on the right or left depending on the engine. Never open the system hot. Not every additive on the market is suitable: ask the workshop.

Operable up to about 50 km/h, not below −10 °C, with the boot lid closed and the luggage partition folded down, rollover bars not deployed and 2 m of clearance. Do not leave the top wet or dirty in its compartment for more than a day. After an emergency manual closing (two people), have the top checked by a workshop.

The two bars behind the rear head restraints extend in a fraction of a second in a crash or at extreme tilt. If they deployed without taking a load, they can be pushed back by hand (release lever pulled, firm push until they lock). After an accident or damage: checked and replaced by a workshop.
