What distinguishes this version

1,997 cc four-cylinder petrol (N20 in BMW’s parts catalogue, N20B20A at ADAC): 180 kW and 350 Nm. Six-speed manual or eight-speed Steptronic. Coupé 07/2014–05/2016, Convertible 02/2015–06/2016 (ADAC production dates). 0–100 km/h: Coupé 5.7 s (BMW model update, summer 2014); Convertible 6.1 s (automatic 6.0 s) (BMW, Convertible press kit 09/2014).

Engine oil: quantity and approval

Oil change: 5.0 l (BMW, Convertible press kit 09/2014; BMW UK technical data 03/2014). BMW’s Convertible handbook (VI/15) approves for petrol engines BMW Longlife-01, Longlife-01 FE, Longlife-04, Longlife-12 FE and Longlife-14 FE+ (the last only for certain engines), SAE 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40 or 5W-30; failing that, up to 1 litre of ACEA A3/B4. No additives. The level is measured electronically; BMW asks for a check after every refuelling.

What the service display covers

The car calculates each due date (Condition Based Service): the distance or time left appears briefly when the ignition is switched on, details are in the vehicle status menu, and the data is also stored in the key. BMW Service Inclusive lists the items it triggers: oil service with filter, vehicle check, air filter, microfilter, spark plugs and brake fluid. Brake fluid is time-based; periods with the battery disconnected are not counted, so have the workshop update it. BMW’s handbook gives no mileage for any item. Convertible: the handbook adds no scheduled work on the top, but asks you not to leave it wet or dirty in its compartment for more than a day.

Timing drive

Chain (ADAC: “Steuerkette”). BMW’s parts catalogue for the F22 N20 lists timing chain, tensioner, guide and slide rails; BMW’s N20 training document adds a secondary chain with its own tensioner for the balance shafts. No scheduled replacement in the documents consulted: a repair item, not maintenance.

Prepare the next service

Before the appointment, note 5.0 l of oil and an approved grade (Longlife-01, -01 FE, -04, -12 FE or -14 FE+). Hand the advisor the key last used: BMW stores the service data in it. Note the build month (registration document or VIN plate): ADAC lists a BMW recall of September 2024 for cars built 01/2016–12/2017 (driver airbag gas generator; airbag replaced). Have BMW check your VIN. Ask for a printout of the due items: BMW gives no mileage for them. Convertible: mention any fault with the top; after an emergency manual closing, BMW’s handbook asks for the top to be checked by a workshop.

Engine oil — petrol

Due date calculated by CBS

Oil change at the date the car displays; do not run past it. Top-up: BMW Longlife-01, -01 FE, -04, -12 FE or -14 FE+ (the last only for certain petrol engines), SAE 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40 or 5W-30 (0W-20 and 5W-20 only for certain engines). If none is available, up to 1 litre of an ACEA A3/B4 oil. No additives.

Oil level

After every refuelling

Electronic measurement: the status is available after about 30 minutes of driving; the detailed measurement is done standing, engine warm and idling (about 1 minute). Add oil only when the message asks, in the quantity shown, within 200 km. Overfilling can damage the engine or the catalytic converter.

Counted in time, not kilometres. Periods with the battery disconnected are not counted: have the workshop update the time-based items (brake fluid, and where applicable oil and microfilter). The handbook does not state the period.

Coolant

Regular check, engine cold

Level between the Min and Max marks on the expansion tank, engine cold; the tank is on the right or left depending on the engine. Never open the system hot. Not every additive on the market is suitable: ask the workshop.

Soft-top (Convertible)

Each time it is operated

Operable up to about 50 km/h, not below −10 °C, with the boot lid closed and the luggage partition folded down, rollover bars not deployed and 2 m of clearance. Do not leave the top wet or dirty in its compartment for more than a day. After an emergency manual closing (two people), have the top checked by a workshop.

Rollover bars (Convertible)

After a deployment

The two bars behind the rear head restraints extend in a fraction of a second in a crash or at extreme tilt. If they deployed without taking a load, they can be pushed back by hand (release lever pulled, firm push until they lock). After an accident or damage: checked and replaced by a workshop.
