BMW 220d F45/F46 LCI · 190 PS (2018–2022)

Built from 2018 to 2022, the 220d uses the 140 kW B47 four-cylinder diesel engine, in both the Active Tourer and the Gran Tourer. Identify it by the kW figure on the registration document; an oil change takes 5.5 l, and the car itself calculates its service dates.

What distinguishes this version

1,995 cc four-cylinder diesel turbo, B47 family (ADAC engine code B47C20B): 140 kW (190 PS) and 400 Nm. Gearbox: eight-speed Steptronic automatic. BMW quotes 8.2 s for 0–100 km/h and combined consumption of 4.4 l/100 km (NEDC values derived from WLTP, BMW sheet Active Tourer 01/2018). Bodies: Active Tourer (03/2018–09/2021) and Gran Tourer (03/2018–07/2022), production dates from ADAC. Automatic only after the facelift, with front-wheel drive or xDrive (BMW quotes 8.1 s for the Active Tourer xDrive).

Engine oil: quantity and approvals

Oil change: 5.5 l according to BMW’s specification sheets (Active Tourer 01/2018, Gran Tourer 01/2018, Active Tourer 09/2018, Active Tourer 03/2021, “oil change”). For top-ups, the VI/19 Active Tourer handbook allows BMW Longlife-04 or Longlife-12 FE, SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40 (0W-20 and 5W-20 are not suitable for diesels), or up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3 if none is available; no additives. The level is measured electronically; BMW asks for a detailed measurement after every refuelling (car level, engine warm and running), under My Vehicle › Vehicle status › Engine oil level. Add oil only when the car asks for it, by the quantity it displays.

What the service display tracks

The car calculates each due date from how it is used (Condition Based Service) and briefly shows the distance or time to the next service when the ignition is switched on; details are under My Vehicle › Vehicle status › Service required. BMW’s regular maintenance covers engine oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, the air filter, the cabin microfilter and the fuel filter. Brake fluid (and where applicable oil and microfilter) is counted in time and periods with the battery disconnected are not counted: have the workshop update these items. Neither the handbook nor BMW’s list sets a mileage or period: the dates are the ones your car displays. The car can also send these due dates to the service partner (Teleservice Call). AdBlue comes on top: at least 5 litres at the yellow warning, 10 litres if the tank is empty (ISO 22241-1 fluid).

Timing drive

Chain (ADAC: “Steuerkette”). BMW’s parts catalogue for the F45 splits the timing drive into a lower and an upper chain; the lower part includes chain, sprocket, guide rail, two tensioners and an oil spray nozzle. No scheduled replacement in the documents consulted: the chain is a repair item, not maintenance. A metallic noise at start-up deserves a diagnosis.

Recalls to check

ADAC lists for this version: March 2021: extension of the EGR cooler recall to certain BMW diesels, with the F45/F46 of both phases listed and no build period specified (EGR module checked, faulty parts replaced); July 2026: wear deposits in the starter relay that can cause a short circuit and a fire risk at the starter, cars built 07/2020–02/2026 (starter replaced). Not every car is affected: have a BMW workshop check your VIN.

Prepare the next service

Check the power on the registration document (140 kW) and the first-registration date. Note the items and dates shown under “Service required”. Give the service advisor the key the car was last driven with: the car stores its service data in it. Ask for 5.5 l of an oil with a BMW Longlife approval listed in the handbook, then check that the work is entered in the electronic service history, which a later owner can view. Also check the AdBlue level (My Vehicle › Vehicle status › AdBlue): BMW expects one top-up between services as a rule.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil — diesel (facelift)

Due date calculated by CBS

Oil change at the date the car displays; do not run past it. Top-up: BMW Longlife-04 or Longlife-12 FE, SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40 (0W-20 and 5W-20 are not suitable for diesels); if unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3. No additives.

Other maintenance items — diesel

As the service requirement dictates

BMW lists as regular maintenance: brake fluid, a vehicle check to BMW specifications, air filter, cabin microfilter and fuel filter. Each item is triggered by the service requirement the car calculates.

Brake fluid

Calendar-based (CBS)

Counted in time, not kilometres. Periods with the battery disconnected are not counted: have the workshop update the time-based items (brake fluid, and where applicable oil and microfilter/activated-charcoal filter). The handbook does not state the period.

AdBlue

At the reserve warning

AdBlue to ISO 22241-1, preferably from a pump. Yellow warning: add at least 5 litres; tank empty: at least 10 litres, or the car will not restart once switched off. Below –5 °C top-ups may be needed more often. BMW expects one top-up between services as a rule, done by the workshop.

Coolant

Regular check, engine cold

Level correct between the yellow Min and Max marks in the filler neck, engine cold; first open the cap slightly to release the pressure. Top up slowly without overfilling, then have the cause of the loss found. Not every additive is suitable: ask the workshop.

Questions about this version (5)

How does it differ from the 218d?

Same B47 engine and the same ADAC code (B47C20B), but 140 kW and 400 Nm instead of 110 kW and 350 Nm. Gearboxes: eight-speed Steptronic automatic for the 220d; six-speed manual or eight-speed Steptronic automatic for the 218d. Both take 5.5 l of oil at an oil change on BMW’s sheets.

Source : [4] [5] [7] [13] [12] [6]

Is there an xDrive version?

Yes: 220d xDrive from 03/2018 according to ADAC, with the eight-speed Steptronic automatic. Same engine (B47C20B) and output as the front-wheel-drive version. BMW’s Active Tourer 01/2018 sheet gives the same oil quantity for both (5.5 l).

Source : [13] [14] [4]

How much AdBlue should I add?

At the yellow warning, at least 5 litres; if the tank has run empty, at least 10 litres, or the engine will not restart once switched off. Use ISO 22241-1 AdBlue, preferably from a pump; the exact quantity is shown under My Vehicle › Vehicle status › AdBlue. Below –5 °C top-ups may be more frequent, and below –11 °C the level may only show after a short drive.

What differs from the pre-facelift version?

Before March 2018: 140 kW and 400 Nm (B47C20B), six-speed manual or eight-speed Steptronic automatic, 5.0 l of oil. After: 140 kW and 400 Nm (B47C20B), eight-speed Steptronic automatic, 5.5 l of oil. The facelifted diesels add SCR with AdBlue to the NOx storage catalyst (ADAC); the VI/19 handbook also accepts ACEA C2 for an emergency top-up.

Is it available as a Gran Tourer?

Yes. ADAC lists the 220d as an Active Tourer from 03/2018 to 09/2021 and as a Gran Tourer from 03/2018 to 07/2022. Engine and servicing are the same; the Gran Tourer is 4,568 mm long (2,780 mm wheelbase) and can have seven seats.
