Engine oil: quantity and approvals
Oil change: 5.5 l according to BMW’s specification sheets (Active Tourer 01/2018, Gran Tourer 01/2018, Active Tourer 09/2018, Active Tourer 03/2021, “oil change”). For top-ups, the VI/19 Active Tourer handbook allows BMW Longlife-04 or Longlife-12 FE, SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40 (0W-20 and 5W-20 are not suitable for diesels), or up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3 if none is available; no additives. The level is measured electronically; BMW asks for a detailed measurement after every refuelling (car level, engine warm and running), under My Vehicle › Vehicle status › Engine oil level. Add oil only when the car asks for it, by the quantity it displays.

What the service display tracks
The car calculates each due date from how it is used (Condition Based Service) and briefly shows the distance or time to the next service when the ignition is switched on; details are under My Vehicle › Vehicle status › Service required. BMW’s regular maintenance covers engine oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, the air filter, the cabin microfilter and the fuel filter. Brake fluid (and where applicable oil and microfilter) is counted in time and periods with the battery disconnected are not counted: have the workshop update these items. Neither the handbook nor BMW’s list sets a mileage or period: the dates are the ones your car displays. The car can also send these due dates to the service partner (Teleservice Call). AdBlue comes on top: at least 5 litres at the yellow warning, 10 litres if the tank is empty (ISO 22241-1 fluid).

Timing drive
Chain (ADAC: “Steuerkette”). BMW’s parts catalogue for the F45 splits the timing drive into a lower and an upper chain; the lower part includes chain, sprocket, guide rail, two tensioners and an oil spray nozzle. No scheduled replacement in the documents consulted: the chain is a repair item, not maintenance. A metallic noise at start-up deserves a diagnosis.

Recalls to check
ADAC lists for this version: March 2021: extension of the EGR cooler recall to certain BMW diesels, with the F45/F46 of both phases listed and no build period specified (EGR module checked, faulty parts replaced); July 2026: wear deposits in the starter relay that can cause a short circuit and a fire risk at the starter, cars built 07/2020–02/2026 (starter replaced). Not every car is affected: have a BMW workshop check your VIN.

Prepare the next service
Check the power on the registration document (110 kW) and the first-registration date. Note the items and dates shown under “Service required”. Give the service advisor the key the car was last driven with: the car stores its service data in it. Ask for 5.5 l of an oil with a BMW Longlife approval listed in the handbook, then check that the work is entered in the electronic service history, which a later owner can view. Also check the AdBlue level (My Vehicle › Vehicle status › AdBlue): BMW expects one top-up between services as a rule.
