BMW 2 Series Active Tourer / Gran Tourer F45/F46 LCI (2018–2022)

BMW put the updated Active Tourer and Gran Tourer on sale in March 2018 with a larger kidney grille, dual-clutch gearboxes and AdBlue diesels. Several versions changed output in November 2020: the kW figure on the registration document and the build date identify yours. ADAC dates the end of production to 09/2021 for the Active Tourer and 07/2022 for the Gran Tourer. Anything we could not verify is left out.

Active Tourer or Gran Tourer, and spotting the facelift

Recognise the facelift by its much taller and wider kidney grille reaching almost to the headlights; a three-part lower air intake framed by gloss-black C shapes; twin circular headlights with a hexagonal look (LED optional); 90 mm tailpipes, doubled on every four-cylinder model. The Active Tourer is 4,354 mm long (2,670 mm wheelbase, 468–1,510 litres; 400–1,350 litres for the 225xe); the Gran Tourer 4,568 mm (2,780 mm wheelbase, 645–1,905 litres, optional third row for seven seats). The 225i xDrive and the 225xe are Active Tourer only. BMW built the Active Tourer in Leipzig and the Gran Tourer in Regensburg.

Maintenance: what BMW documents

Oil change quantities on BMW’s sheets: 4.25 l (216i and 218i in 2018, 225xe), 4.5 l (216i and 218i on the 03/2021 sheet), 5.25 l (220i, 225i xDrive), 4.8 l (216d), 5.5 l (218d, 220d) — more than before the facelift for the diesels. The VI/19 handbook lists for top-ups: petrol Longlife-04, -12 FE or -17 FE+; diesel Longlife-04 or -12 FE; up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3 otherwise; SAE 0W-20 and 5W-20 are not for diesels. It asks for a detailed oil-level measurement after every refuelling. The diesels switch to SCR with AdBlue (ISO 22241-1): at least 5 litres at the reserve warning, 10 litres when empty. BMW’s regular maintenance remains oil, brake fluid, vehicle check, air filter, microfilter and spark plugs or fuel filter, triggered by Condition Based Service.

Recalls to check

ADAC lists: high-voltage battery cells that may short-circuit on plug-in hybrids built 01–09/2020 (November 2020, cells checked and replaced if needed); the extension of the diesel EGR cooler recall (March 2021); deposits in the starter relay that can cause a short circuit and a fire risk, on cars built from 07/2020 (July 2026, starter replaced).
