What sets this version apart

210 kW (286 hp) and 650 Nm: straight-six diesel engine of 2,993 cc, engine code B57D30B according to ADAC. Period: from 07/2022 (ADAC dates). One page for the G20 saloon and the G21 Touring. Eight-speed Steptronic automatic. Rear-wheel drive, or optional xDrive (ADAC entries from 07/2022). From 07/2024, ADAC only lists the xDrive version. 0–100 km/h in 5.3 s and 250 km/h for the saloon according to ADAC (manufacturer data). Mild-hybrid six-cylinder; the 2022 sheet gives 7.0 l of oil, against 6.5 l for the 195 kW 330d of 2019.

Engine oil: quantity and checks

Oil-change quantity published by BMW: 7 l (05/2022, 05/2024 specification sheets, “Engine oil” line, footnote “oil change”). Approvals and viscosities: see the engine block below; the LCI G20 handbook (VI/23) also lists them, see the generation page. This handbook asks for a detailed level measurement after every refuelling: car level, engine warm, selector in N or P, via Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Engine oil level. Only top up when the message appears, by the quantity shown, without additives.

48-volt mild hybrid and emissions control

48-volt mild hybrid: 8 kW (11 hp) starter-generator according to BMW; ADAC lists this version as a mild hybrid from 07/2022. Nothing to plug in; the 48-volt battery is a workshop matter. Emissions control by SCR catalyst (AdBlue), NOx storage catalyst and particulate filter according to ADAC; standard Euro 6d-ISC-FCM → Euro 6e-bis-FCM. AdBlue to ISO 22241-1, filler next to the fuel cap; when the reserve warning starts, add at least 5 litres (G20 handbook).

What the service indicator tracks

Condition Based Service calculates each due date from actual use; details appear in Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Service requirements, together with the service history. The data are also stored in the key. BMW’s regular maintenance covers engine oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, air filter, cabin microfilter and fuel filter. Brake fluid and, where applicable, oil and microfilter also depend on time; periods with the battery disconnected are not counted, so have the workshop update them. Neither the handbook nor BMW sets a mileage: the reference is the displayed date, which must not be exceeded.

Recalls to check

ADAC lists two BMW recalls for the LCI G20/G21, both for a fire risk at the starter: February 2026 (production 05/2020–10/2024) and July 2026 (07/2020–02/2026), wear deposits in the relay that can cause a short circuit; the starter is replaced. Not every car built in a period is affected: have the VIN checked.

Preparing the service

Note the output (210 kW) and first-registration date on the registration certificate, then the due dates in the service requirements menu. Hand over the key used on the last drive: it holds the service data. Ask for 7 l of a BMW-approved oil for this engine. Mention whether the AdBlue reserve warning has appeared. Have the VIN checked for the recalls listed by ADAC and make sure the work is entered in the electronic service history.

BMW B57 diesel engine (3.0 l, six-cylinder)

This applies to every car fitted with the B57 engine.

What the B57 is

Inline six-cylinder diesel engine of 2,993 cc with common-rail direct injection, from the same modular family as the B47 and B58. The number of turbochargers depends on the version. ADAC gives three codes: B57D30A for the 2017 G30 530d (195 kW/265 PS, 620 Nm, Euro 6c), B57D30C for the 2016 G11 750d xDrive (four turbochargers, 294 kW/400 PS, 760 Nm) and B57D30B for the 2020 facelifted 530d (48 V mild hybrid, twin turbo, 210 kW/286 PS, 650 Nm, Euro 6d-ISC-FCM). All have SCR, a NOx storage catalyst and a particulate filter.

Engine oil

BMW handbooks only list oils for topping up and leave the oil change to a qualified workshop; the list depends on the handbook edition. 5 Series G30 handbook (VI/20): BMW Longlife-04 or -12 FE — the handbook adds that Longlife-12 FE is not suitable for the 25d, 35d, 40d and 50d diesels — in SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40 (0W-20 and 5W-20 are excluded for diesels); otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3. No additives. The Longlife-12 FE restriction names the “50d” designation, that of the four-turbo 750d (B57D30C); for a 30d the handbook allows it. No B57-specific oil-change quantity was found in the BMW sources consulted: ask the workshop for the figure for your VIN.

Timing drive

Chain, according to ADAC. BMW’s training documents on the modular family explain that, because the crankcase is shared by petrol and diesel engines, the timing drive is two-part: a lower chain drives an intermediate shaft, which on the diesels also drives the high-pressure pump, and an upper chain drives the camshafts. The sources consulted give no replacement interval.

Recall campaign

In October 2018 BMW expanded a technical campaign on the EGR module of certain diesels: glycol leaking from the EGR cooler, combined with soot deposits, can create smouldering particles and, very rarely, melt the intake manifold or cause a fire. About 1.6 million vehicles worldwide, built August 2010 to August 2017, with periods varying by model; the module is checked and faulty parts replaced. BMW does not list engine codes, so have the VIN checked.

What changed over the years

2016: four-turbo 750d xDrive, presented by BMW as the world’s most powerful six-cylinder diesel — injection above 2,500 bar, peak combustion pressure raised from 200 to 210 bar, head and crankcase castings densified by hot isostatic pressing, twin-wire arc-sprayed cylinder bores. 2017: G30 530d (B57D30A, Euro 6c). 2020: facelifted 530d as a 48 V mild hybrid (B57D30B), 210 kW and 650 Nm, Euro 6d-ISC-FCM.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil

Due date calculated by CBS

Change the oil at the date the car displays, without exceeding it: the G20 handbook warns that oil changed too late increases engine wear. Between changes, only add the quantity the message asks for, using an approved oil and no additives.

Other maintenance items — diesel

As the service requirement dictates

BMW lists as regular maintenance: brake fluid, a vehicle check to BMW specifications, air filter, cabin microfilter and fuel filter. Each item is triggered by the service requirement the car calculates.

Source [1]

Time-based items

Calendar-based (CBS)

Brake fluid and, where applicable, engine oil and the microfilter/activated-carbon filter also depend on time. Periods with the battery disconnected are not taken into account: have the workshop update these items. The handbook gives no period.

AdBlue

At the reserve warning

AdBlue to ISO 22241-1, filler next to the fuel cap. When the reserve warning starts, add at least 5 litres; the exact quantity is shown in vehicle status. If AdBlue is at the minimum, the car only becomes drivable again once the display goes out.
