Engine oil: quantity and checks

No BMW sheet we consulted gives the oil-change quantity for this version yet: ask for the VIN-specific value. Approvals and viscosities: see the engine block below; the LCI G20 handbook (VI/23) also lists them, see the generation page. This handbook asks for a detailed level measurement after every refuelling: car level, engine warm, selector in N or P, via Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Engine oil level. Only top up when the message appears, by the quantity shown, without additives.

48-volt mild hybrid and emissions control

48-volt mild hybrid: 9 kW (12 hp) starter-generator according to BMW; ADAC lists this version as a mild hybrid from 09/2025. Nothing to plug in; the 48-volt battery is a workshop matter. Petrol particulate filter according to ADAC; emissions standard Euro 6e-bis-FCM.

What the service indicator tracks

Condition Based Service calculates each due date from actual use; details appear in Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Service requirements, together with the service history. The data are also stored in the key. BMW’s regular maintenance covers engine oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, air filter, cabin microfilter and spark plugs. Brake fluid and, where applicable, oil and microfilter also depend on time; periods with the battery disconnected are not counted, so have the workshop update them. Neither the handbook nor BMW sets a mileage: the reference is the displayed date, which must not be exceeded.

Recalls to check

ADAC lists two BMW recalls for the LCI G20/G21, both for a fire risk at the starter: February 2026 (production 05/2020–10/2024) and July 2026 (07/2020–02/2026), wear deposits in the relay that can cause a short circuit; the starter is replaced. Not every car built in a period is affected: have the VIN checked.

Preparing the service

Note the output (288 kW) and first-registration date on the registration certificate, then the due dates in the service requirements menu. Hand over the key used on the last drive: it holds the service data. Have the oil quantity confirmed against the VIN. Have the VIN checked for the recalls listed by ADAC and make sure the work is entered in the electronic service history.

BMW B58 petrol engine (3.0 l, six-cylinder)

This applies to every car fitted with the B58 engine.

What the B58 is

Inline six-cylinder petrol engine of 2,998 cc (82 mm bore, 94.6 mm stroke, 11:1 compression) with twin-scroll turbocharger, direct injection, double VANOS, a closed-deck crankcase and indirect charge-air cooling integrated into the intake. BMW places it in the same modular family as the B38, B48 and B57, and launched it in mid-July 2015 in the F30 340i (240 kW/326 PS and 450 Nm according to ADAC, which codes it B58B30A). BMW designates the version in the facelifted 2 Series M240i (2017) as B58B30M0. In 2021 the G42 M240i xDrive Coupé quotes 275 kW (374 hp) and 500 Nm from the same displacement.

Engine oil

BMW handbooks only list oils for topping up and leave the oil change to a qualified workshop; the list depends on the handbook edition. 5 Series G30 handbook (VI/20): BMW Longlife-04, -12 FE or -17 FE+, in SAE 0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40; otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3. 2 Series Coupé G42 handbook (VI/22): BMW Longlife-12 FE or -17 FE+, in SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30 only; otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C5. No additives. Quantities published by BMW: 6.5 l for the B58B30M0 of the M240i (2017, “filling quantity”) and 7.2 l for an oil change on the G42 M240i xDrive Coupé (2021). No quantity is sourced here for other installations.

Timing drive

Chain, on the transmission side, confirmed by ADAC. According to BMW’s training document it is two-part: a lower chain drives an intermediate shaft, which passes the drive to the upper camshaft chain; the oil pump has its own chain and the tensioners are hydraulic with spring preload. The inertia of the transmission reduces the torsional vibrations acting on the chain. The sources consulted give no replacement interval.

What changed over the years

2015: launch in the F30 340i, replacing the N55 (2,979 cc, 225 kW); Euro 6b according to ADAC. 2017: facelifted 2 Series, M240i with B58B30M0. 2021: G42 M240i xDrive Coupé, 275 kW (374 hp) and 500 Nm, Euro 6d. The sources consulted do not detail the internal changes between these versions, so nothing more should be inferred.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil

Due date calculated by CBS

Change the oil at the date the car displays, without exceeding it: the G20 handbook warns that oil changed too late increases engine wear. Between changes, only add the quantity the message asks for, using an approved oil and no additives.

Other maintenance items — petrol and plug-in hybrids

As the service requirement dictates

BMW lists as regular maintenance: brake fluid, a vehicle check to BMW specifications, air filter, cabin microfilter and spark plugs. Each item is triggered by the service requirement the car calculates.

Time-based items

Calendar-based (CBS)

Brake fluid and, where applicable, engine oil and the microfilter/activated-carbon filter also depend on time. Periods with the battery disconnected are not taken into account: have the workshop update these items. The handbook gives no period.
