Engine oil

BMW’s May 2012 dossier gives 8.0 l for rear-wheel-drive and xDrive 650i Gran Coupé, marked as provisional data. This figure is not extended here to other bodies and model years. Oil approvals, timing drive and shared engine characteristics are detailed in the engine section.

Maintenance and CBS deadlines

CBS calculates service needs from use. Read engine oil, brake fluid and vehicle check separately in service requirements. Plan the oil filter with the oil change; have the cabin filter, air filter and spark plugs or diesel fuel filter itemised against the service counter. The consulted handbook does not give their complete version-specific schedule. Report storage with the battery disconnected so time-based items can be corrected.

Documented faults and recalls

ADAC documents seat-mechanism and airbag campaigns on selected batches, plus diesel EGR-cooler campaigns. EGR applies to 640d, not petrol 640i/650i. Lists combine several bodies: check VIN and completed campaigns. The early N63 US care programme, explained in the engine section, is separate from a recall.

Prepare the service

Bring the VIN, build month, N63B44 code and 330 kW rating. Record CBS dates and counters, previous oil services and filter changes; bring the key used for the last journey. Have the oil and work itemised on the invoice and the service recorded. Report storage with the battery disconnected so time-based deadlines can be corrected.

BMW N63 engine — twin-turbo petrol V8

This applies to every car fitted with the N63 engine.

Identity and distinguishing features

N63 is a family of twin-turbo petrol V8 engines. Early versions and later VALVETRONIC revisions are not interchangeable for parts or service specifications. Identify the revision by VIN; output and model badge alone are insufficient. Oil-change quantity depends on installation and is listed on the vehicle page.

Source : [10]

Engine oil

US handbooks illustrate the revision differences: 6 Series II/15 lists Longlife-01 or Longlife-01 FE and SAE 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30 or 5W-40; 8 Series VI/21 excludes Longlife-14 FE+, Longlife-17 FE+ and SAE 0W-20 for 50i, leaving Longlife-01 FE and SAE 0W-30 in the published lists. These US top-up specifications are not universal European approvals: check the VIN-specific handbook and engine label. Do not add oil additives.

Timing drive

Timing uses chains. The consulted BMW documents give no universal scheduled replacement interval. The 2015 US N63 bulletin discusses replacement following diagnosis and technical approval; it establishes neither a guaranteed lifetime nor the same fault on all later N63 engines.

Documented faults and recalls

In January 2015 BMW North America issued a Customer Care Package for selected early N63 engines, covering air-mass meters, high-pressure injectors, vacuum pump, low-pressure fuel sensor/line, turbo intake seals and crankcase ventilation lines. It explicitly was a care programme, not a regulatory recall. Its F12/F13 scope ends with July 2012 production. The bulletin does not establish eligibility for a European vehicle, an N63 TU or an M850i. Check repair history and vehicle-specific diagnosis.

Engine oil change

Oil deadline displayed by CBS

Record remaining date and distance before work. Use the version-specific quantity and a VIN-approved oil; check the level and record the oil service once completed. The consulted document does not justify a universal fixed mileage.

Brake fluid

Brake-fluid service date

Read the brake-fluid deadline separately from pad wear. Compare it with the last replacement invoice; report storage with the battery disconnected before correcting service dates. Reset only completed work.

Vehicle check

Vehicle-check deadline, separate from oil service

Keep the CBS vehicle-check item separate from oil service. Provide service history and the key last used so the workshop can read actual requirements. An oil change alone does not prove the vehicle check was completed.
