What distinguishes this version

1,496 cc three-cylinder diesel turbo (ADAC engine code B37C15A): 85 kW (116 PS) at 4,000 rpm and 270 Nm from 1,750 to 2,250 rpm. Seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch as standard, front-wheel drive. 10.3 s for 0–100 km/h, 200 km/h. WLTP combined on BMW’s 03/2021 sheet: 5.3–4.6 l/100 km (4.1–3.8 NEDC). Euro 6d, SCR with AdBlue, 42-litre tank. BMW added it in November 2020; ADAC lists it until 06/2024.

Engine oil: quantity and approvals

Oil change: 4.8 l according to BMW’s 11/2020 specification sheet (oil-change quantity). The 03/2021 sheet gives the same quantity. For top-ups, the F44 handbook (X/21) allows up to 1 litre of BMW Longlife-04 or Longlife-12 FE, SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40 (ACEA C2 or C3 if unavailable), with no additives. The level is measured electronically: it is monitored while driving, and a detailed measurement can be started with the car stationary, level and warm, under CAR › Vehicle status › Engine oil level. Only add oil when the car asks for it, by the quantity it displays.

What the service display tracks

The car calculates each due date from how it is used (Condition Based Service) and briefly shows the next date or remaining distance when switched on; details are under CAR › Vehicle status › Service required. BMW’s regular maintenance covers engine oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, the air filter, the cabin microfilter and the fuel filter. Brake fluid is counted in time and periods with the battery disconnected are not counted: have the workshop update the time-based items. AdBlue comes on top: at least 5 litres at the yellow warning, 10 litres if the tank is empty (ISO 22241-1 fluid). Neither the handbook nor BMW’s list sets a mileage or period for these items: the dates are the ones your car displays.

Timing drive

Timing chain, according to the ADAC catalogue (“Steuerkette”). It is not among the regular maintenance items BMW lists: no scheduled replacement. An unusual noise at start-up or idle still calls for a diagnosis.

Recalls to check

The ADAC catalogue lists no recall for this version (2 catalogue pages checked on 8 October 2026). That is not a guarantee: a BMW workshop can check the VIN for any open campaign on your car.

Prepare the next service

Check the power on the registration document (85 kW) and the first-registration date. Note the items and dates shown under “Service required”. Give the service advisor the key the car was last driven with: the car stores its service data in it. Ask for 4.8 l of a BMW-approved oil, then check that the work is entered in the electronic service history, which a later owner can view. Also check the AdBlue level (CAR › Vehicle status › AdBlue): BMW expects one top-up between services as a rule.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil — diesel

Due date calculated by CBS

Oil change at the date the car displays; do not run past it. Top-up: up to 1 litre of BMW Longlife-04 or Longlife-12 FE oil, SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40 (ACEA C2 or C3 if unavailable). No additives.

Other maintenance items — diesel

As the service requirement dictates

BMW lists as regular maintenance: brake fluid, a vehicle check to BMW specifications, air filter, cabin microfilter and fuel filter. Each item is triggered by the service requirement the car calculates.

Brake fluid

Calendar-based (CBS)

Counted in time, not kilometres. Periods with the battery disconnected are not counted: have the workshop update the time-based items (brake fluid, and where applicable oil and microfilter). The handbook does not state the period.

AdBlue

At the reserve warning

AdBlue to ISO 22241-1, filler next to the fuel cap. Yellow warning: add at least 5 litres; tank empty: at least 10 litres, or the car will not restart. BMW expects one top-up between services as a rule, done by the workshop.

Coolant

Regular check, engine cold

Level between the Min and Max marks in the filler neck, engine cold. BMW recommends coolant to BMW LC-18, mixed 50:50 with water; do not mix additives of different colours. Up to two expansion tanks depending on the engine.

Questions about this version (5)

Three or four cylinders?

Three cylinders and 1,496 cc according to BMW’s 11/2020 and 03/2021 sheets and BMW’s autumn 2020 announcement. The ADAC catalogue page shows 4 cylinders and 1,995 cc, which contradicts BMW: we follow the manufacturer’s data, to be compared with the registration document.

Source : [3] [4] [1] [6]

Is there a manual version?

Not in BMW’s documents: the 11/2020 and 03/2021 sheets list only the seven-speed dual-clutch, which the autumn 2020 announcement describes as standard. ADAC lists only “Steptronic (DKG)” versions.

How does it differ from the 218d?

85 kW and 270 Nm against 110 kW and 350 Nm; three cylinders and 1,496 cc against four and 1,995 cc; dual-clutch against a manual or eight-speed automatic. Oil: 4.8 l against 5.5 l.

Which diesel?

EN 590 diesel with up to 7 % biodiesel (B7) according to BMW’s handbook; at minimum B10 or paraffinic diesel to EN 15940 (XTL). Never pure methyl ester or petrol: after a misfuelling, do not start the engine.

How much AdBlue should I add?

At the yellow warning, at least 5 litres; if the tank has run empty, at least 10 litres, or the car cannot be restarted once switched off. Use ISO 22241-1 fluid; the filler is next to the fuel filler, and the exact quantity is shown under CAR › Vehicle status › AdBlue.
