BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé F44 (2020–2024)

Sold from March 2020 to autumn 2024 and built only in Leipzig, the F44 is the four-door coupé of the 1 Series F40 family. Identify your version by the kW on the registration document: the 218i, for example, went from 103 to 100 kW in November 2020. Figures come from BMW documents, the F44 handbook and the ADAC catalogue; anything we could not verify is left out.

Gran Coupé or 1 Series F40: what differs

The F44 is the four-door coupé version of BMW’s front-wheel-drive compact: it uses the architecture of the 1 Series F40, transverse engines included. Four doors with frameless windows, 4,526 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, 1,420 mm high, a 2,670 mm wheelbase and a 430-litre boot, 40 litres more than the two-door 2 Series Coupé. It has nothing in common with the rear-wheel-drive 2 Series Coupé (F22, then G42). Mechanically, the engines are those of the 1 Series F40 (B38, B48, B37, B47) and BMW’s sheets give the same oil-change quantities as for the equivalent F40 versions; the oil approvals in the F44 handbook (X/21 edition) are also the same. If you know how a 1 Series F40 is serviced, the Gran Coupé is identical: what differs is the body, the boot and the weights.

The 170 kW 228i xDrive is US-only according to BMW’s press kit: it is not covered here. No F44 version has 48-volt mild hybrid technology; BMW introduces it with the next generation (F74). ADAC lists a timing chain for every version.

Maintenance: what BMW documents

Oil change quantities (BMW specification sheets): 4.25 l for the 103 kW 218i, 4.5 l for the 100 kW one, 5.25 l for the 220i and M235i xDrive, 4.8 l for the 216d and 5.5 l for the 218d and 220d. For top-ups, the F44 handbook (X/21) allows up to 1 litre of: petrol — BMW Longlife-12 FE or Longlife-17 FE+, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30; diesel — BMW Longlife-04 or Longlife-12 FE, SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40. Coolant BMW LC-18 at 50:50; AdBlue to ISO 22241-1 for the diesels. Super RON 95 recommended (minimum RON 91), Super Plus RON 98 for the M235i xDrive. Due dates are calculated by Condition Based Service, stored in the key and shown under CAR › Vehicle status › Service required. BMW’s regular maintenance covers oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, air filter and microfilter, plus spark plugs (petrol) or fuel filter (diesel). The handbook gives no mileage and no period: the reference is the dates your car displays. Running-in a new car: up to 2,000 km, no more than 4,500 rpm and 160 km/h on petrol, 3,500 rpm and 150 km/h on diesel.

Recalls to check

The ADAC catalogue lists no recall for the F44 versions we checked (218i, 220i, 220i xDrive, M235i xDrive, 216d, 218d, 220d and 220d xDrive, 2020 to 2024; checked on 8 October 2026). That is not a guarantee: a BMW workshop can check the VIN for any open campaign on your car.
