Engine oil: quantity

Oil change: 7 l according to BMW’s specification sheets (03/2021, 07/2021, 01/2024). Approvals and viscosity grades: see the “B57 engine” block on this page. The top-up list in the 4 Series handbook depends on the edition (VI/20 or X/23, see the generation page). The level is measured electronically: car level, engine warm and running, CAR › Vehicle status › Engine oil level › Oil level measurement › Start measurement. Only add oil when the car asks for it, in the quantity given in the message.

What the service display tracks

The car calculates each due date from how it is used (Condition Based Service) and briefly shows the next date or remaining distance after switching on; details, including statutory inspections, are under CAR › Vehicle status › Service requirements, and completed work under Service History. BMW’s regular maintenance covers engine oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, air filter, cabin microfilter and fuel filter. Brake fluid and, where applicable, oil and microfilter also depend on time. Neither the handbook nor BMW’s list sets a mileage or period.

Prepare the next service

Check the power on the registration document (210 kW). Note the items and dates shown under CAR › Vehicle status › Service requirements. Give the service advisor the key the car was last driven with: the car stores its service data in it. Ask for 7 l of a BMW-approved oil. Have the VIN checked against the starter recalls listed by ADAC, then check that the work is entered in the electronic Service History, which a later owner can also view.

BMW B57 diesel engine (3.0 l, six-cylinder)

This applies to every car fitted with the B57 engine.

What the B57 is

Inline six-cylinder diesel engine of 2,993 cc with common-rail direct injection, from the same modular family as the B47 and B58. The number of turbochargers depends on the version. ADAC gives three codes: B57D30A for the 2017 G30 530d (195 kW/265 PS, 620 Nm, Euro 6c), B57D30C for the 2016 G11 750d xDrive (four turbochargers, 294 kW/400 PS, 760 Nm) and B57D30B for the 2020 facelifted 530d (48 V mild hybrid, twin turbo, 210 kW/286 PS, 650 Nm, Euro 6d-ISC-FCM). All have SCR, a NOx storage catalyst and a particulate filter.

Engine oil

BMW handbooks only list oils for topping up and leave the oil change to a qualified workshop; the list depends on the handbook edition. 5 Series G30 handbook (VI/20): BMW Longlife-04 or -12 FE — the handbook adds that Longlife-12 FE is not suitable for the 25d, 35d, 40d and 50d diesels — in SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40 (0W-20 and 5W-20 are excluded for diesels); otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3. No additives. The Longlife-12 FE restriction names the “50d” designation, that of the four-turbo 750d (B57D30C); for a 30d the handbook allows it. No B57-specific oil-change quantity was found in the BMW sources consulted: ask the workshop for the figure for your VIN.

Timing drive

Chain, according to ADAC. BMW’s training documents on the modular family explain that, because the crankcase is shared by petrol and diesel engines, the timing drive is two-part: a lower chain drives an intermediate shaft, which on the diesels also drives the high-pressure pump, and an upper chain drives the camshafts. The sources consulted give no replacement interval.

Recall campaign

In October 2018 BMW expanded a technical campaign on the EGR module of certain diesels: glycol leaking from the EGR cooler, combined with soot deposits, can create smouldering particles and, very rarely, melt the intake manifold or cause a fire. About 1.6 million vehicles worldwide, built August 2010 to August 2017, with periods varying by model; the module is checked and faulty parts replaced. BMW does not list engine codes, so have the VIN checked.

What changed over the years

2016: four-turbo 750d xDrive, presented by BMW as the world’s most powerful six-cylinder diesel — injection above 2,500 bar, peak combustion pressure raised from 200 to 210 bar, head and crankcase castings densified by hot isostatic pressing, twin-wire arc-sprayed cylinder bores. 2017: G30 530d (B57D30A, Euro 6c). 2020: facelifted 530d as a 48 V mild hybrid (B57D30B), 210 kW and 650 Nm, Euro 6d-ISC-FCM.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil (2020 handbook)

Due date calculated by CBS

Oil change at the date the car displays, without running past it; BMW recommends having it done by a workshop. Top-up oils in the VI/20 handbook: petrol BMW Longlife-04, -12 FE or -17 FE+; diesel Longlife-04 or -12 FE (-12 FE is not suitable for the 25d, 35d, 40d and 50d diesels). Viscosities SAE 0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40, with 0W-20 and 5W-20 excluded for diesel. If unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3. No additives.

Engine oil (2024 handbook)

Due date calculated by CBS

Oil change at the date the car displays. Top-up oils in the X/23 handbook: petrol BMW Longlife-12 FE, -17 FE+ or -19 FE (without a petrol particulate filter, BMW prefers Longlife-01 FE to -12 FE); diesel Longlife-12 FE or -17 FE+. Viscosities SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30 only. If unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C5. No additives.

Other maintenance items — diesel

As the service requirement dictates

BMW lists as regular maintenance: brake fluid, a vehicle check to BMW specifications, air filter, cabin microfilter and fuel filter. Each item is triggered by the service requirement the car calculates.

Source [1]

Time-based items

Calendar-based (CBS)

Brake fluid and, where applicable, engine oil and the microfilter/activated-carbon filter also depend on time. The VI/20 handbook states that periods with the battery disconnected are not taken into account: have the workshop update these items. The handbook gives no period.

AdBlue

At the reserve warning

Yellow reserve warning: add at least 5 litres; tank empty: at least 15 litres, or the car will not restart once switched off. BMW recommends having it topped up during regular maintenance; one top-up between services is usually enough. Below −5 °C it may need topping up more often; below −11 °C, only add it just before driving off.

Source [12]

Coolant

Regular check, engine cold

Level correct at the Max mark in the expansion tank filler neck, engine cold and air conditioning off. BMW recommends coolant to BMW LC-18, mixed 50:50 with water; do not mix additives of different colours. At delivery or after a workshop visit the tank may be overfilled: the normal level settles with use.

Soft top (Convertible)

Every wash; impregnate every 3–5 washes

Do not open the roof when wet, snow-covered, iced or dirty, and do not leave it open for more than a day while damp. Clean it with a dedicated soft-top cleaner, never with stain remover, thinner, solvent or petrol. After three to five washes, treat it with an impregnating agent. It is not designed to carry a roof rack.

Questions about this version (5)

Why is the 430d Convertible rear-wheel drive when the Coupé is xDrive?

That is how BMW offers them: the 430d Coupé has always been listed with xDrive, the 430d Convertible with rear-wheel drive, from its July 2021 launch to the 2024 sheets. ADAC confirms rear-wheel drive for the 430d Convertible from 03/2024. Same engine, same 7.0 l oil change.

Source : [4] [7] [11] [15]

Which oil quantity for the 430d?

7.0 l according to the 03/2021 Coupé sheet, the 07/2021 Convertible sheet and both 01/2024 sheets. For top-ups, the VI/20 handbook allows Longlife-04 or -12 FE for diesels; the -12 FE exclusion names the 25d, 35d, 40d and 50d engines, not the 30d.

Source : [4] [7] [10] [11] [12]

Which fuel?

EN 590 diesel with up to 7% biodiesel (B7); B10 as the minimum; paraffinic diesel to EN 15940 (XTL) is allowed. Never pure methyl ester or petrol. BMW recommends using only diesel additives rated as suitable.

Source : [12] [13]

Which recalls can apply to this version?

ADAC lists three BMW starter recalls covering this generation of the 4 Series: October 2025 (built 09/2015–09/2021), February 2026 (05/2020–10/2024) and July 2026 (07/2020–02/2026). A relay poorly protected against water, or wear deposits in it, can cause a short circuit and a fire; the starter is replaced. Not every car is affected: have your VIN checked.

Source : [14]

How should a new car of this version be run in?

Up to 2,000 km, do not exceed 3,500 rpm or 150 km/h, avoid full load and kick-down and do not use Launch Control; then increase gradually. New tyres need a gentle approach for the first 300 km, the brakes for about 500 km. The same rules apply after these parts are replaced.
