BMW 4 Series Coupé G22 and Convertible G23 (since 2020)

Built in Dingolfing since July 2020, the G22 Coupé went on sale in October 2020 and the G23 Convertible, now with a fabric roof instead of a folding hard top, in March 2021. Both bodies share their engines, so each version below covers both. The March 2024 update changed the styling and the line-up, not the engines. To identify yours, compare the kW on the registration document with those on this page. Figures come from BMW press documents and specification sheets, the owner’s handbook and the ADAC catalogue; anything we could not verify is left out.

Identifying your car

G22 is the two-door Coupé, G23 the Convertible; the five-door Gran Coupé (G26) has its own page. The March 2024 update keeps the same codes: new lights, BMW Operating System 8.5 with QuickSelect, sport seats and steering-wheel paddles as standard, the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission on every engine and Euro 6e. ADAC splits the range into 10/2020–01/2024 and from 03/2024. The M4 Coupé and Convertible (G82/G83) are separate BMW M models and are not covered here.

Engine line-up and engine codes

Petrol, 1,998 cc four-cylinder (B48): 420i with 135 kW (184 hp, B48B20A according to ADAC); 430i with 190 kW (258 hp, B48B20B) at launch, replaced in July 2021 by a 180 kW (245 hp) 430i, also with xDrive. Petrol, 2,998 cc six-cylinder (B58) with 48-volt mild hybrid: M440i xDrive with 275 kW (374 hp, B58B30B), also with rear-wheel drive from July 2021 (Coupé) and November 2021 (Convertible); 288 kW (392 hp, B58B30P) from autumn 2025. Diesel with 48-volt mild hybrid: 420d with 140 kW (190 hp, B47D20B), xDrive available on the Coupé; 430d with 210 kW (286 hp) and M440d xDrive with 250 kW (340 hp), both B57D30B, on the Coupé since March 2021; the Convertible got the rear-wheel-drive 430d in July 2021 and the M440d xDrive in November 2021. All have an eight-speed Steptronic automatic; ADAC lists a timing chain for every version.

Maintenance: what BMW documents

Oil-change quantities from BMW specification sheets: 5.25 l (420i, 258 hp 430i), 5.75 l (245 hp 430i), 7.2 l (M440i xDrive on the 03/2021 and 01/2024 sheets; the 06/2020 sheet said 6.5 l), 5.5 l (420d), 7.0 l (430d and M440d). The handbook lists top-up oils only and recommends a workshop oil change at the date the car shows. The VI/20 edition accepts BMW Longlife-04, -12 FE or -17 FE+ for petrol, Longlife-04 or -12 FE for diesel (-12 FE excluded for the 25d, 35d, 40d and 50d diesels), SAE 0W-20 to 5W-40, or up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3 as a stopgap. The X/23 edition narrows this to Longlife-12 FE, -17 FE+ or -19 FE (petrol) and -12 FE or -17 FE+ (diesel), SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30 only, with ACEA C2 or C5 as a stopgap. Coolant BMW LC-18 at 50:50; AdBlue for the diesels. Due dates are calculated by Condition Based Service and stored in the key: CAR › Vehicle status › Service requirements. Running-in up to 2,000 km: 4,500 rpm and 160 km/h on petrol, 3,500 rpm and 150 km/h on diesel, no full load, kick-down or Launch Control.

Convertible: the soft top

The G23 replaces the previous generation’s folding hard top with a panel-bow fabric roof about 40% lighter. It opens or closes in about 18 seconds, at up to 50 km/h. Boot: 300 litres with the roof open, 385 litres with it closed and the compartment flap raised. The handbook (X/23) says not to open it when wet, snow-covered, iced or dirty, and not to leave it open for more than a day while damp. It only works above −10 °C, with the boot closed and the luggage partition folded down; allow 2.5 m of clearance above and 0.5 m behind. Clean it with a dedicated soft-top cleaner, never with solvent or petrol, and impregnate it every three to five washes. No roof racks. If the drive fails, two people can close it by hand with the tools stowed in the boot.

Recalls to check

ADAC lists three BMW starter recalls for this generation, all for fire risk and all fixed by replacing the starter: October 2025 for cars built 09/2015–09/2021 (relay insufficiently protected against water); February 2026 for 05/2020–10/2024 and July 2026 for 07/2020–02/2026 (wear deposits in the relay, higher contact resistance, possible short circuit). The July 2026 recall also covers updated cars (from 03/2024). Not every car built in those periods is affected: have your VIN checked.
