Servicing and CBS deadlines

CBS calculates deadlines from usage; read distance and date under Vehicle info → Vehicle status → Service required. The F10 handbook lists oil, oil filter and microfilter at each oil service; fuel filter and air filter every second oil change; front and rear pads, brake fluid and vehicle check at their own deadlines. The handbook sets no universal fixed oil-change mileage.

Documented recalls

ADAC’s F10/F11 5 Series list cites, for this period: starter relay insufficiently sealed against water, corrosion and fire risk; starter replaced (August 2026 recall, cars built 07/2014–11/2020); passenger, curtain, knee and side airbags with faulty igniter mix (January 2017 recall, cars built 07/2016–12/2016). These campaigns target build ranges and often other models too: only a VIN check confirms eligibility and completion.

Preparing the service

Bring the VIN, build month, engine code B47D20A and the 140 kW output. Note the CBS deadlines and hand over the key used on the last drive: it stores service data. Mention any period with the battery disconnected, which CBS does not count. Ask for oil, filters and operations to be itemised and the service recorded in the history.

Engine oil

BMW handbooks only list oils for topping up and leave the oil change to a qualified workshop; the list depends on the handbook edition. 2 Series Active Tourer F45 handbook (II/17): BMW Longlife-04, or Longlife-12 FE for certain diesels only, in SAE 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40 or 5W-30; otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C3. F45 facelift handbook (VI/19) / 5 Series G30 handbook (VI/20): BMW Longlife-04 or -12 FE — the handbook adds that Longlife-12 FE is not suitable for the 25d, 35d, 40d and 50d diesels — in SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40 (0W-20 and 5W-20 are excluded for diesels); otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3. 1 Series F40 handbook (II/22): BMW Longlife-04 or -12 FE, in SAE 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40; otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C3. 2 Series Coupé G42 handbook (VI/22) / Active Tourer U06 handbook (X/24): BMW Longlife-12 FE or -17 FE+, in SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30 only; otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C5. Timing drive

Chain, according to ADAC. BMW’s training documents on the modular family explain that, because the crankcase is shared by petrol and diesel engines, the timing drive is two-part: a lower chain drives an intermediate shaft, which on the diesels also drives the high-pressure pump, and an upper chain drives the camshafts. The sources consulted give no replacement interval.

Recall campaign

In October 2018 BMW expanded a technical campaign on the EGR module of certain diesels: glycol leaking from the EGR cooler, combined with soot deposits, can create smouldering particles and, very rarely, melt the intake manifold or cause a fire. About 1.6 million vehicles worldwide, built August 2010 to August 2017, with periods varying by model; the module is checked and faulty parts replaced. BMW does not list engine codes, so have the VIN checked.
