What distinguishes this version

BMW quotes 6.7 s for 0–100 km/h and combined consumption of 2.1–2.0 l/100 km (NEDC, BMW sheet 225xe 09/2015). Active Tourer only (03/2016–02/2018 according to ADAC).

Engine oil: quantity and approvals
Oil change: 4.25 l according to BMW’s specification sheets (225xe 09/2015, “oil change”). The plug-in hybrid’s own handbook was not among the documents we consulted, so we do not carry over the oil approvals from the handbooks of the combustion-only versions. Ask the workshop for the BMW-approved oil for your VIN.

What the service display tracks
BMW lists as regular maintenance for a combustion-engined car: engine oil with its top-ups, brake fluid, a vehicle check, the air filter, the microfilter and the spark plugs, each due when Condition Based Service shows it (yellow or red status). Because the 225xe’s own handbook was not consulted, we do not detail its menus or any high-voltage maintenance: follow the dates your car displays, and use a workshop qualified to work on high-voltage vehicles.

Plug-in hybrid: battery, charging and engine
The lithium-ion battery sits under the rear seat: 7.6 kWh gross, of which 5.8 kWh usable according to BMW’s 2015 press kit. Electric range up to 41 km (NEDC); electric top speed 125 km/h in MAX eDRIVE, 80 km/h in AUTO eDRIVE. Full charge in about 2.2 h at 3.7 kW (16 A/230 V) from a BMW i Wallbox, or from a household socket with the supplied cable. Fuel tank: 36 litres. The petrol engine is the B38 three-cylinder with a timing chain (ADAC).

Recalls to check
ADAC lists for this version: January 2017: passenger, head, knee and side airbags that may not fire in the first stage (cars built 07–12/2016; airbags replaced). Not every car is affected: have a BMW workshop check your VIN.

Prepare the next service
Check the power on the registration document (165 kW) and the first-registration date. Note the items and dates shown under “Service required”. Give the service advisor the key the car was last driven with: the car stores its service data in it. Ask for 4.25 l of the BMW-approved oil for your car, then check that the work is entered in the electronic service history, which a later owner can view. Also mention that it is a plug-in hybrid: the workshop must be qualified for high-voltage work.
