BMW 2 Series Active Tourer / Gran Tourer F45/F46 (2014–2018)
Launched in Germany on 27 September 2014, the Active Tourer was the first BMW with front-wheel drive; the longer Gran Tourer, available with a third row, followed in June 2015. Both share engines and servicing: find your version by the kW figure on the registration document and the build date. Figures come from BMW documents and the ADAC catalogue; anything we could not verify is left out.

Active Tourer or Gran Tourer, and which phase
The Active Tourer (F45) is 4,342 mm long on a 2,670 mm wheelbase, with five seats and 468–1,510 litres of luggage space. The Gran Tourer (F46) is 4,556 mm long and 1,608 mm tall on a 2,780 mm wheelbase: 645–1,905 litres as a five-seater, plus an optional third row for two extra passengers. Only the Active Tourer was offered with the 225i and the 225xe plug-in hybrid. This page covers cars built before March 2018. The facelift brought a much larger kidney grille reaching almost to the headlights, a three-part lower air intake, hexagonal-styled headlights and twin tailpipes on every four-cylinder model. ADAC dates this first phase 09/2014–02/2018 (Gran Tourer: 06/2015–02/2018).
Engine line-up and engine codes

BMW’s parts catalogue lists the same engine families (B37, B38, B47, B48) for both bodies. For the Gran Tourer 218i with manual gearbox, ADAC lists 103 kW (140 PS) and Euro 6c from 07/2017.
Maintenance: what BMW documents
Oil change quantities on BMW’s specification sheets: 4.25 l (216i, 218i, 225xe), 5.25 l (220i, 225i), 4.4 l (214d, 216d), 5.0 l (218d, 220d). The Active Tourer (II/17) and Gran Tourer (VI/16) handbooks list the same top-up oils: petrol BMW Longlife-01, -01 FE, -04, -12 FE or -14 FE+; diesel Longlife-04 or -12 FE; if none is available, up to 1 litre of ACEA A3/B4 (petrol) or C3 (diesel). There is no dipstick: the oil level is measured electronically. Due dates come from Condition Based Service; BMW’s regular maintenance covers oil, brake fluid, vehicle check, air filter, microfilter, plus spark plugs (petrol) or fuel filter (diesel). Brake fluid is counted in time. These diesels use a NOx storage catalyst and a particulate filter (ADAC), without AdBlue; EN 590 diesel only, no biodiesel.
Recalls to check
ADAC lists for this phase: a passenger seat-belt retractor that may lock (cars built 09–11/2014, belt system replaced, January 2015); airbags that may not fire in the first stage (built 07–12/2016, January 2017); the rear backrest frame (Active Tourer, 2016, about a dozen cars); an EGR cooler fire risk on four- and six-cylinder diesels built 01/2010–12/2017 (July 2019), extended in March 2021 (EGR module checked, faulty parts replaced).
