What distinguishes this version

1,998 cc four-cylinder petrol turbo (ADAC engine code B48B20A): 115 kW (156 hp) between 4,500 and 6,500 rpm and 250 Nm between 1,300 and 4,300 rpm. Eight-speed Steptronic automatic, rear-wheel drive; steering-wheel paddles have been standard since summer 2022 and, since the 2024 update, the Steptronic Sport transmission is optional on the 218i only, standard on the other four-cylinders. BMW quotes 8.7 s for 0–100 km/h and 224 km/h; WLTP combined consumption 7.1–6.5 l/100 km (160–146 g/km CO2), Euro 6d at launch and Euro 6e on the 06/2024 sheet. The handbook allows a 1,300 kg braked trailer, against 1,600 kg for the 220i. Timing chain according to ADAC.

Engine oil: quantity and approvals

Oil change: 5.25 l according to BMW’s 05/2022 and 06/2024 specification sheets (“oil change volume”). For top-ups, the G42 handbook (VI/22) lists BMW Longlife-12 FE or Longlife-17 FE+, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30 (if unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C5), with no additives. The level is measured electronically: it is monitored while driving (a value is available after about 30 minutes of normal driving), and a detailed measurement is started with the car level, engine warm and selector in N or P, under MENU › Vehicle apps › Vehicle status › Engine oil level › Oil level measurement › Start measurement. The handbook advises running it after every refuelling. Only add oil when the car asks for it, in the quantity given in the message.

What the service display tracks

The car calculates each due date from how it is used (Condition Based Service) and briefly shows the next date or remaining distance after switching on; details, including statutory inspections, are under MENU › Vehicle apps › Vehicle status › Service requirements, and completed work under Service History. BMW’s regular maintenance covers engine oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, air filter, cabin microfilter and spark plugs. Brake fluid and, where applicable, oil and microfilter also depend on time; periods with the battery disconnected are not counted, so have the workshop update them. Neither the handbook nor BMW’s list sets a mileage or period.

Prepare the next service

Check the first-registration date and the power on the registration document (115 kW). Note the items and dates shown under MENU › Vehicle apps › Vehicle status › Service requirements. Give the service advisor the key the car was last driven with: the car stores its service data in it. Ask for 5.25 l of a BMW-approved oil. Have the VIN checked against the starter recalls listed by ADAC, then check that the work is entered in the electronic Service History, which a later owner can also view.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil

Due date calculated by CBS

Oil change at the date the car displays; do not run past it. Top-up, up to 1 litre: BMW Longlife-12 FE or Longlife-17 FE+, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30, for petrol and diesel alike. If unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C5. No additives. Only add the quantity the car’s message asks for.

Other maintenance items — petrol

As the service requirement dictates

BMW lists as regular maintenance: brake fluid, a vehicle check to BMW specifications, air filter, cabin microfilter and spark plugs. Each item is triggered by the service requirement the car calculates.

Time-based items

Calendar-based (CBS)

Brake fluid and, where applicable, engine oil and the microfilter/activated-carbon filter also depend on time. The G42 handbook states that periods with the battery disconnected are not taken into account: have the workshop update these items. The handbook gives no period.

Coolant

Regular check, engine cold

Level correct just below the Max mark in the expansion tank filler neck, engine cold. BMW recommends coolant to BMW LC-18, mixed 50:50 with water; do not mix additives of different colours. At delivery the tank may be overfilled: the normal level settles with use.

Questions about this version (5)

Is the 218i a three-cylinder?

No. BMW quotes a 2.0-litre four-cylinder of 1,998 cc, the same displacement as the 220i, and ADAC gives both the engine code B48B20A. The 218i delivers 115 kW and 250 Nm, against 135 kW and 300 Nm for the 220i.

Did the 2024 update change the engine?

No. The 06/2024 specification sheet keeps 115 kW, 250 Nm, 8.7 s and 5.25 l of oil; only the emission standard moves to Euro 6e. ADAC still lists the B48B20A for versions sold from August 2025. The update mainly brought the M Sport Package as standard and the optional Steptronic Sport transmission.

Which fuel?

The handbook specifies Super RON 95, with unleaded RON 91 as the minimum. Ethanol is allowed up to 25% (E10, E25). On RON 91 or with more than 10% ethanol, knocking and noticeable changes in driving behaviour and noise are possible, with no effect on engine life according to BMW. Published output and consumption refer to RON 98 E10. Never use leaded petrol or metallic additives (manganese, iron).

Which recalls can apply to this version?

ADAC lists two BMW starter recalls covering its production period: February 2026 for cars built 05/2020–10/2024 and July 2026 for cars built 07/2020–02/2026. Wear deposits in the starter relay can raise contact resistance and cause a short circuit, with a fire risk; the starter is replaced. Not every car is affected: have your VIN checked.

How should a new car of this version be run in?

Up to 2,000 km, do not exceed 4,500 rpm or 160 km/h, and avoid full load and kick-down; then increase gradually. New tyres need a gentle approach for the first 300 km, the brakes for about 500 km. The same rules apply after these parts are replaced.
