Engine oil: quantity and approvals

Oil change: 7.2 l for the M240i xDrive according to BMW’s 07/2021 and 06/2024 specification sheets. We found no BMW sheet for the rear-wheel-drive M240i: have the quantity confirmed for your VIN. For top-ups, the G42 handbook (VI/22) lists BMW Longlife-12 FE or Longlife-17 FE+, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30 (if unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C5), with no additives. The level is measured electronically: it is monitored while driving (a value is available after about 30 minutes of normal driving), and a detailed measurement is started with the car level, engine warm and selector in N or P, under MENU › Vehicle apps › Vehicle status › Engine oil level › Oil level measurement › Start measurement. The handbook advises running it after every refuelling. Only add oil when the car asks for it, in the quantity given in the message.

What the service display tracks

The car calculates each due date from how it is used (Condition Based Service) and briefly shows the next date or remaining distance after switching on; details, including statutory inspections, are under MENU › Vehicle apps › Vehicle status › Service requirements, and completed work under Service History. BMW’s regular maintenance covers engine oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, air filter, cabin microfilter and spark plugs. Brake fluid and, where applicable, oil and microfilter also depend on time; periods with the battery disconnected are not counted, so have the workshop update them. Neither the handbook nor BMW’s list sets a mileage or period.

Prepare the next service

Check the first-registration date and the power on the registration document (275 kW). Note the items and dates shown under MENU › Vehicle apps › Vehicle status › Service requirements. Give the service advisor the key the car was last driven with: the car stores its service data in it. Ask for 7.2 l (M240i xDrive) of a BMW-approved oil. Have the VIN checked against the starter recalls listed by ADAC, then check that the work is entered in the electronic Service History, which a later owner can also view.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil

Due date calculated by CBS

Oil change at the date the car displays; do not run past it. Top-up, up to 1 litre: BMW Longlife-12 FE or Longlife-17 FE+, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30, for petrol and diesel alike. If unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C5. No additives. Only add the quantity the car’s message asks for.

Other maintenance items — petrol

As the service requirement dictates

BMW lists as regular maintenance: brake fluid, a vehicle check to BMW specifications, air filter, cabin microfilter and spark plugs. Each item is triggered by the service requirement the car calculates.

Time-based items

Calendar-based (CBS)

Brake fluid and, where applicable, engine oil and the microfilter/activated-carbon filter also depend on time. The G42 handbook states that periods with the battery disconnected are not taken into account: have the workshop update these items. The handbook gives no period.

Coolant

Regular check, engine cold

Level correct just below the Max mark in the expansion tank filler neck, engine cold. BMW recommends coolant to BMW LC-18, mixed 50:50 with water; do not mix additives of different colours. At delivery the tank may be overfilled: the normal level settles with use.

Questions about this version (5)

M240i or M240i xDrive: what changes for maintenance?

The engine is the same (B58B30B, 275 kW, 500 Nm according to ADAC). The xDrive adds the transfer case with its multi-plate clutch and is 55 kg heavier according to the handbook (1,765 against 1,710 kg). ADAC lists the rear-wheel-drive M240i in Germany from 07/2022 to 06/2024; after the August 2024 update only the M240i xDrive remains, until the 288 kW version replaced it in autumn 2025.

Is the M240i an M2?

No. The M240i is an M Performance model derived from the 2 Series Coupé, with the B58 engine. The M2 (G87) is a separate BMW M model with an S58 engine according to ADAC and its own handbook: it is not covered here.

What does the M Technology Package add?

Offered for the M240i with the 2024 update, it adds optimised cooling for the engine and the charge air and larger discs for the M Sport brakes, aimed at track use. If your car has it, tell the workshop before brake discs are ordered.

Which fuel?

The handbook specifies Super RON 95, with unleaded RON 91 as the minimum. Ethanol is allowed up to 25% (E10, E25). On RON 91 or with more than 10% ethanol, knocking and noticeable changes in driving behaviour and noise are possible, with no effect on engine life according to BMW. Published output and consumption refer to RON 98 E10. Never use leaded petrol or metallic additives (manganese, iron).

Which recalls can apply to this version?

ADAC lists three BMW starter recalls for this generation, all for fire risk and all fixed by replacing the starter: October 2025 for cars built up to 09/2021 (relay insufficiently protected against water), February 2026 for 05/2020–10/2024 and July 2026 for 07/2020–02/2026 (wear deposits in the relay). Not every car is affected: have your VIN checked.
