BMW 2 Series Coupé G42 (since 2021)

Built in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, since September 2021 and sold in Europe since early 2022, the G42 shares nothing with the front-wheel-drive 1 Series: it borrows its technology from the 3 Series and 4 Series. Every version has an eight-speed Steptronic automatic. To identify yours, compare the kW on the registration document with those on this page. Figures come from BMW documents, the owner’s handbook and the ADAC catalogue; anything we could not verify is left out.

What changed compared with the F22

The car grows: 4,537 mm long (+105 mm), 1,838 mm wide (+64 mm), 1,390 mm tall (−28 mm) on a 2,741 mm wheelbase (+51 mm). Tracks widen by 54 mm at the front and 31 mm at the rear (63 and 35 mm on the M240i xDrive). The boot holds 390 litres and the loading edge is 35 mm lower. BMW makes it a standalone model, unrelated to the 1 Series’ front-wheel-drive architecture, drawing on the 3 Series and 4 Series. Every engine gets the eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. The M240i xDrive gains 25 kW over its predecessor and has the M Sport differential as standard; the 220d moves to two-stage turbocharging and 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

Engine line-up and engine codes

Petrol, 1,998 cc four-cylinder: 218i with 115 kW (156 hp, B48B20A according to ADAC) from July 2022; 220i with 135 kW (184 hp, B48B20A) from the early-2022 launch; 230i with 180 kW (245 hp, B48B20B) from March 2022. Petrol, 2,998 cc six-cylinder: M240i xDrive with 275 kW (374 hp, B58B30B) from 2022 to 2025, also offered with rear-wheel drive (M240i) in Germany from July 2022 to June 2024; then M240i xDrive with 288 kW (392 hp, B58B30P, mild hybrid) announced in autumn 2025. Diesel, 1,995 cc four-cylinder: 220d with 140 kW (190 hp, B47D20B) and 8 kW 48-volt mild hybrid, from launch. ADAC lists a timing chain for all these versions. The M2 (G87) is a separate BMW M model with its own S58 six-cylinder: it is not covered here.

Maintenance: what BMW documents

Oil change quantities (BMW specification sheets): 5.25 l for the 218i and 220i, 5.5 l for the 220d, 7.2 l for the 275 kW M240i xDrive. For the 230i, the 03/2022 sheet gives 5.75 l and the 06/2024 sheet 5.25 l. No quantity has been published for the 288 kW M240i xDrive. Top-up oils in the G42 handbook (VI/22), petrol and diesel alike: BMW Longlife-12 FE or Longlife-17 FE+, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30, no additives; if unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C5. Coolant BMW LC-18 at 50:50; AdBlue to ISO 22241-1 for the 220d. Due dates are calculated by Condition Based Service, stored in the key and shown under MENU › Vehicle apps › Vehicle status › Service requirements. BMW’s regular maintenance covers oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, air filter and microfilter, plus spark plugs (petrol) or fuel filter (diesel). The handbook gives no mileage and no period: the reference is the dates your car displays. Running-in a new car: up to 2,000 km, no more than 4,500 rpm and 160 km/h on petrol, 3,500 rpm and 150 km/h on diesel, without full load or kick-down.

Recalls to check

ADAC lists three BMW recalls on the starter for this generation, all for fire risk and all fixed by replacing the starter: October 2025 for cars built 09/2015–09/2021 (starter relay insufficiently protected against water); February 2026 for 05/2020–10/2024 and July 2026 for 07/2020–02/2026 (wear deposits in the relay, higher contact resistance, possible short circuit). Not every car built in those periods is affected: have BMW check your VIN.

Dates and updates

The first car came off the line in Mexico in early September 2021; European sales began in early 2022 with the 220i, M240i xDrive and 220d, followed by the 230i in March 2022. July 2022 brought the 218i and the rear-wheel-drive M240i, with the BMW Curved Display and steering-wheel paddles as standard. The updated version launched in August 2024: M Sport Package as standard, BMW Operating System 8.5, M Sport suspension standard on the four-cylinders, Steptronic Sport transmission standard except on the 218i. The specification sheets keep the same outputs and oil quantities (except the 230i, see above) and move to Euro 6e. Summer 2025: tyre repair kit as standard. Autumn 2025: new 288 kW engine for the M240i xDrive.
