Engine oil: quantity and approval
The sources consulted do not give the N55 oil change quantity: the TIS archive used (issue 12/2007) predates this engine. Have it read from BMW documentation using the VIN. Longlife-04 oils are approved for petrol engines only in the EU, Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein; outside that area, use the approval BMW specifies for the country.

What the CBS tracks
The CBS calculates the oil due date from the fuel used; the sources consulted do not give the N55’s own starting value. The service content follows BMW’s list for petrol models built from 03/2007. At every oil service: oil and filter, handbrake check, microfilter. Every third oil service: air filter and spark plugs. Front and rear pads, brake fluid and the vehicle check each have their own service.

What the Convertible adds to maintenance
At the vehicle check, the workshop triggers the rollover protection system via the diagnosis interface, with the top opened first. The top’s hydraulic system is filled for life: no fluid change is scheduled, and only the approved fluid is used if it leaks.

What changes from the N54
One twin-scroll turbocharger instead of two, an electronically controlled wastegate, VALVETRONIC, and solenoid injectors instead of the N54’s piezo injectors. Injectors, turbo and intake parts are therefore not interchangeable: order them by engine code. The timing drive is still a chain.

March 2011 facelift
Front apron with Air Curtains, headlights with an upper accent strip, L-shaped tail lights in an all-red housing and LED accents with the xenon headlights. BMW Austria’s January 2013 price list still offers the 135i Convertible, at 8.6 l/100 km.

Prepare the next service
Give the VIN so the exact oil quantity can be looked up. Count oil services since the last spark plugs and air filter, and say whether the car has the manual or the DKG.
