What distinguishes this version

Plug-in hybrid with hybrid-specific all-wheel drive: a 1,499 cc three-cylinder petrol turbo (ADAC: B38A15P) of 100 kW (136 hp) at the front, through the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and an 80 kW (109 hp) electric motor on the rear axle; 180 kW (245 hp) system output and 477 Nm according to ADAC. BMW quotes 6.7 s for 0–100 km/h and, weighted WLTP, 0.8–0.6 l/100 km and 15.8–14.2 kWh/100 km (18–14 g/km). Boot 406–1,370 litres, 47-litre fuel tank. Timing chain according to ADAC.

Engine oil: quantity and approvals

BMW does not publish an oil-change quantity for the plug-in hybrids in the documents we consulted: ask for it for your VIN. For top-ups, the plug-in hybrid handbook (VI/22) allows up to 1 litre of BMW Longlife-12 FE or Longlife-17 FE+, otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C5, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30, with no additives — a shorter list than for the combustion-only versions (no Longlife-19 FE, no ACEA C3). A level reading is available after about 30 minutes of driving with the combustion engine running; the detailed measurement, engine warm, is under MENU › Vehicle apps › Vehicle status › Engine oil level › Oil level measurement. The handbook advises running it after every refuelling.

Plug-in hybrid: battery, charging and precautions

Fifth-generation BMW eDrive: the B38 drives the front wheels and the electric motor the rear wheels, giving hybrid-specific all-wheel drive. Battery of 16.3 kWh gross under the floor; net capacity 14.2 kWh according to ADAC (BMW’s provisional 2021 figure was 14.9 kWh). BMW (summer 2022): 83–92 km electric range WLTP, AC charging at 7.4 kW, 0–100% in 2.5 h; from March 2025 BMW raises AC charging to 11 kW. Per the VI/22 handbook: mode-3 cable up to 16 A, the car cannot be made ready to drive while the cable is connected, the 47-litre fuel tank is pressurised (press the tank-venting button in the driver’s door before opening the flap), and running-in should alternate combustion and electric driving.

What the service display tracks

The car calculates each due date from how it is used (Condition Based Service) and briefly shows the next date or remaining distance after switching on; details, including statutory inspections, are under MENU › Vehicle apps › Vehicle status › Service required. For a combustion-engined car, BMW lists engine oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, air filter, microfilter and spark plugs. The VI/22 handbook asks the workshop to update time-based items (brake fluid and, where applicable, oil and the micro/activated-carbon filter) and says periods with the 12-volt battery disconnected are not taken into account. Work on the high-voltage system: qualified workshop only. The high-voltage battery is maintenance-free.

Recalls to check

ADAC lists for the U06 Active Tourer: November 2022 — cars built 07–09/2022: missing parts on the driver’s outer door handle, which could let the door open in a side impact (adapter carrier checked and reworked; 199 cars worldwide); April 2023 — cars built 01/2021–06/2023: outer rear seat belts that may have been trapped by the C-pillar trim during assembly, reducing restraint in a crash (belts checked and reworked); April 2024 — cars built 01/2022–11/2024: a signal fault in the motor position sensor of the integrated braking system can cut hydraulic brake assistance, with ABS and DSC unavailable (software that warns the driver; braking system replaced if a fault is detected); July 2026 — cars built 07/2020–02/2026: wear deposits in the starter relay can cause a short circuit and a fire risk at the starter (starter replaced). Not every car is affected: have a BMW workshop check your VIN.

Prepare the next service

Check the first-registration date and the power on the registration document (180 kW system output). Note the items and dates shown under MENU › Vehicle apps › Vehicle status › Service required. Give the service advisor the key the car was last driven with: it stores the service data. Ask for a BMW-approved oil, in the quantity specified for your VIN. Mention that it is a plug-in hybrid: the workshop must be qualified for high-voltage work. Then check that the work is entered in the electronic Service History, which a later owner can view.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil — plug-in hybrid

Due date calculated by CBS

Oil change at the date the car displays; do not run past it. Top-up: up to 1 litre of BMW Longlife-12 FE or Longlife-17 FE+, otherwise up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C5, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30. No additives. Only add the quantity the car’s message asks for.

Other maintenance items — plug-in hybrid

As the service requirement dictates

For a combustion-engined car, BMW lists as regular maintenance: brake fluid, a vehicle check to BMW specifications, air filter, cabin microfilter and spark plugs. Each item is triggered by the service requirement the car calculates. Work on the high-voltage system: qualified workshop only.

Time-based items — plug-in hybrid

Calendar-based (CBS)

The VI/22 handbook asks for time-based items to be updated by the workshop: brake fluid and, where applicable, engine oil and the micro/activated-carbon filter. It states that periods with the 12-volt battery disconnected are not taken into account. It gives no period.

High-voltage battery

No maintenance; watch long standstills

The high-voltage battery is maintenance-free according to the handbook. Do not leave the car for more than 14 days with the electric range used up; for more than three months off the road, ask the workshop. Work on the high-voltage system: qualified workshop only. If the battery-temperature warning appears, stop, leave the car, keep your distance and call the emergency services.

Coolant

Regular check, engine cold

Level correct at the Max mark in the filler neck, engine cold (and climate control off, per the X/24 handbook). BMW recommends coolant to BMW LC-18, mixed 50:50 with water; do not mix additives of different colours. Up to two expansion tanks depending on the drive variant.

Questions about this version (5)

How big is the battery and how far does it go on electricity?

16.3 kWh gross; ADAC gives 14.2 kWh net (BMW’s provisional 2021 figure was 14.9 kWh). BMW quotes 83–92 km WLTP; ADAC lists 88 km, then 85 km (03/2024) and 86 km (10/2025).

Source : [3] [2] [8] [9] [10]

How long does charging take?

At launch BMW quoted 7.4 kW AC and 0–100% in 2.5 hours, and under eight hours on a household socket (2021 press kit, provisional figures). From March 2025 BMW raises AC charging to 11 kW; ADAC already lists 11 kW on versions from 03/2024. ADAC lists AC charging only.

225e or 230e: what differs?

The same three-cylinder engine, battery and boot. The 230e has 110 kW from the combustion engine and 130 kW from the electric motor (240 kW system), against 100 + 80 kW (180 kW) for the 225e; it reaches 100 km/h in 5.5 s against 6.7 s. The approved top-up oils are the same.

Can I leave it parked for weeks?

The handbook says not to leave it for more than 14 days with the electric range used up, and to ask a workshop before taking it off the road for more than three months. The 12-volt battery suffers from short trips and standstills of over a month; charge it through the jump-start points in the engine compartment, engine off.

What does BMW change in autumn 2026?

17-inch wheels (Star-spoke style 875) as standard instead of 16-inch ones. BMW then quotes, under the EnVKV rules, 2.9 l/100 km and 11.5 kWh/100 km (66 g/km), and 6.2 l/100 km with a discharged battery. No powertrain change is announced.
