What distinguishes this version
The same 1,995 cc four-cylinder diesel as the 218d (ADAC: B47C20B), 110 kW (150 hp) between 3,750 and 4,000 rpm and 360 Nm, complemented by 48-volt mild hybrid adding 15 kW (20 hp) and up to 55 Nm: 120 kW (163 hp) and 400 Nm in total. Seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, front-wheel drive, SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue. BMW quotes 8.3 s for 0–100 km/h, 220 km/h and 4.9–4.5 l/100 km WLTP combined (128–117 g/km), Euro 6e. The X/24 handbook gives 1,640 kg unladen and a 1,400 kg braked trailer load. Timing chain according to ADAC.

Engine oil: quantity and approvals
BMW’s 07/2024 specification sheet for this version gives no oil-change quantity, and we do not carry over the 218d’s 6.5 l: ask for the exact quantity for your VIN. For top-ups, the X/24 handbook lists for diesels BMW Longlife-12 FE or Longlife-17 FE+, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30 (if unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2 or C5), with no additives. The level is measured electronically: a value is available after about 30 minutes of driving; the detailed measurement (car level, engine warm, selector in N or P) is under Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Engine oil level › Oil level measurement, to be run after every refuelling according to the handbook. Only add oil when the car asks for it, by the quantity given.

This version’s 48-volt system
The 48-volt electric motor integrated into the dual-clutch gearbox acts as a starter generator: 15 kW and 55 Nm added to the combustion engine’s 110 kW and 360 Nm, for 120 kW and 400 Nm in total according to BMW. It helps when pulling away and accelerating, and smooths Auto Start Stop. It is fed by a 19.2 Ah 48-volt battery under the luggage floor, recharged by recuperation when braking and decelerating (up to 15 kW per BMW); hence a boot of 415–1,405 litres instead of 470–1,455. The handbook says not to remove that floor, fold its front part up or work on the 48-volt battery; the 12-volt battery is charged with the engine off, through the jump-start points, bonnet open. When coasting, these versions may use no fuel at all. There is nothing to plug in: this is not a plug-in hybrid.

What the service display tracks
The car calculates each due date from how it is used (Condition Based Service) and briefly shows the next date or remaining distance after switching on; details, including statutory inspections, are under Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Service. BMW’s regular maintenance covers engine oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, air filter, cabin microfilter and fuel filter. Time-based items such as fluid replacement must be updated by the workshop; the X/24 handbook says periods with the battery disconnected are taken into account. The service history is electronic and replaces the printed service booklet. Neither the handbook nor BMW sets a mileage or period: the reference is the date your car displays.

Recalls to check
ADAC lists for the U06 Active Tourer: April 2024 — cars built 01/2022–11/2024: a signal fault in the motor position sensor of the integrated braking system can cut hydraulic brake assistance, with ABS and DSC unavailable (software that warns the driver; braking system replaced if a fault is detected); July 2026 — cars built 07/2020–02/2026: wear deposits in the starter relay can cause a short circuit and a fire risk at the starter (starter replaced). Not every car is affected: have a BMW workshop check your VIN.

Prepare the next service
Check the first-registration date and the power on the registration document (BMW: 120 kW total, of which 110 kW from the diesel engine). Note the items and dates shown under Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Service. Give the service advisor the key the car was last driven with: it stores the service data. Ask for a BMW-approved oil, in the quantity specified for your VIN. Have the AdBlue topped up as well. Then check that the work is entered in the electronic Service History, which a later owner can view.
