BMW 216i Active Tourer U06 · 122 hp (2022–2026)

Added in autumn 2022 (11/2022 according to ADAC), the 216i is the entry point of the range: the same three-cylinder as the 218i, but with 90 kW and no mild hybrid. ADAC lists it until 10/2026. An oil change takes 4.5 l.

What distinguishes this version

1,499 cc three-cylinder petrol turbo (ADAC engine code B38A15P): 90 kW (122 hp) between 3,900 and 6,500 rpm and 230 Nm between 1,500 and 3,600 rpm, without mild hybrid. Seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch gearbox, front-wheel drive. BMW quotes 10.3 s for 0–100 km/h, 206 km/h and 6.7–6.2 l/100 km WLTP combined (152–140 g/km CO2). Boot 470–1,455 litres, 70 Ah 12-volt battery in the engine compartment. Braked trailer load 1,100 kg (BMW sheet and X/24 handbook), against 1,300 kg for the 218i. Timing chain according to ADAC.

Engine oil: quantity and approvals

Oil change: 4.5 l according to BMW’s 11/2022 specification sheet (“oil change”). For top-ups, the X/24 handbook lists BMW Longlife-12 FE, Longlife-17 FE+ or Longlife-19 FE, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30 (if unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2, C3 or C5), with no additives. The level is measured electronically: a value is available after about 30 minutes of normal driving; the detailed measurement (car level, engine warm, selector in N or P) is under Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Engine oil level › Oil level measurement, and the handbook advises running it after every refuelling. Only add oil when the car asks for it, by the quantity given in the message.

What the service display tracks

The car calculates each due date from how it is used (Condition Based Service) and briefly shows the next date or remaining distance after switching on; details, including statutory inspections, are under Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Service. BMW’s regular maintenance covers engine oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, air filter, cabin microfilter and spark plugs. Time-based items such as fluid replacement must be updated by the workshop; the X/24 handbook says periods with the battery disconnected are taken into account. The service history is electronic and replaces the printed service booklet. Neither the handbook nor BMW sets a mileage or period: the reference is the date your car displays.

Recalls to check

ADAC lists for the U06 Active Tourer: April 2023 — cars built 01/2021–06/2023: outer rear seat belts that may have been trapped by the C-pillar trim during assembly, reducing restraint in a crash (belts checked and reworked); April 2024 — cars built 01/2022–11/2024: a signal fault in the motor position sensor of the integrated braking system can cut hydraulic brake assistance, with ABS and DSC unavailable (software that warns the driver; braking system replaced if a fault is detected); July 2026 — cars built 07/2020–02/2026: wear deposits in the starter relay can cause a short circuit and a fire risk at the starter (starter replaced). Not every car is affected: have a BMW workshop check your VIN.

Prepare the next service

Check the first-registration date and the power on the registration document (90 kW). Note the items and dates shown under Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Service. Give the service advisor the key the car was last driven with: it stores the service data. Ask for 4.5 l of a BMW-approved oil. Then check that the work is entered in the electronic Service History, which a later owner can view.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil — petrol

Due date calculated by CBS

Oil change at the date the car displays; do not run past it. Top-up: BMW Longlife-12 FE, Longlife-17 FE+ or Longlife-19 FE, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30. If unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2, C3 or C5. No additives. Only add the quantity the car’s message asks for.

Other maintenance items — petrol

As the service requirement dictates

BMW lists as regular maintenance: brake fluid, a vehicle check to BMW specifications, air filter, cabin microfilter and spark plugs. Each item is triggered by the service requirement the car calculates.

Time-based items

Calendar-based (CBS)

Some maintenance items depend on time, for example replacing operating fluids. The X/24 handbook states that periods with the battery disconnected are taken into account; have the workshop update these items. The handbook gives no period.

Coolant

Regular check, engine cold

Level correct at the Max mark in the filler neck, engine cold (and climate control off, per the X/24 handbook). BMW recommends coolant to BMW LC-18, mixed 50:50 with water; do not mix additives of different colours. Up to two expansion tanks depending on the drive variant.

Questions about this version (5)

How do I tell it from a 218i?

By the kW on the registration document: 90 kW for the 216i, 100 kW for the 218i. Both use the B38A15P three-cylinder according to ADAC, have no mild hybrid and take 4.5 l at an oil change according to BMW’s sheets. The 216i is slower (10.3 s against 9.0 s to 100 km/h) and tows less (1,100 kg braked against 1,300 kg).

Source : [3] [2] [9] [11]

Does it have mild hybrid?

No. Like the 218i, it only has a 70 Ah 12-volt battery in the engine compartment and keeps the full 470–1,455-litre boot; 48-volt mild hybrid starts with the 220i.

Source : [3] [2]

Is the 216i still built?

ADAC lists it until 10/2026. BMW’s autumn 2026 release announces a 96 kW (131 hp) 218i for November 2026 production and does not mention the 216i.

Which fuel?

The handbook specifies Super RON 95, with RON 91 as the minimum, and up to 25% ethanol (E10, E25). On RON 91 or with more than 10% ethanol, knocking and noticeable changes in driving behaviour and noise are possible, with no effect on engine life according to BMW. Published output and consumption refer to RON 98 E10. Never use metallic additives (manganese, iron).

How should a new car of this version be run in?

Up to 2,000 km, do not exceed 4,500 rpm or 160 km/h, and avoid full load and kick-down; then increase gradually. New tyres need a gentle approach for 300 km, the brakes for about 500 km. The same rules apply after these parts are replaced.
