BMW 223i Active Tourer U06 · 218 hp (2022–2025)

The front-wheel-drive 223i was the most powerful petrol model from the February 2022 launch; ADAC lists it until 06/2025, after which only the 223i xDrive remains. Four cylinders and 48-volt mild hybrid; an oil change takes 5.25 l.

What distinguishes this version

1,998 cc four-cylinder petrol (ADAC: B48A20P) with twin-scroll turbocharger and 48-volt mild hybrid: 150 kW (204 hp) between 5,000 and 6,500 rpm and 320 Nm between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm from the combustion engine, plus 14 kW and 55 Nm, for 160 kW (218 hp) and 360 Nm. Seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with its own ratios, front-wheel drive, 17-inch wheels as standard. BMW quotes 7.0 s for 0–100 km/h, 241 km/h and 6.6–6.0 l/100 km WLTP combined (149–137 g/km). 1,500 kg braked trailer load. Timing chain; built 02/2022–06/2025 according to ADAC.

Engine oil: quantity and approvals

Oil change: 5.25 l according to BMW’s 10/2021 specification sheet (“oil change”). For top-ups, the X/24 handbook lists BMW Longlife-12 FE, Longlife-17 FE+ or Longlife-19 FE, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30 (if unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2, C3 or C5), with no additives. The level is measured electronically: a value is available after about 30 minutes of normal driving; the detailed measurement (car level, engine warm, selector in N or P) is under Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Engine oil level › Oil level measurement, and the handbook advises running it after every refuelling. Only add oil when the car asks for it, by the quantity given in the message.

This version’s 48-volt system

The 48-volt electric motor integrated into the dual-clutch gearbox acts as a starter generator: 14 kW and 55 Nm added to the combustion engine’s 150 kW and 320 Nm, for 160 kW and 360 Nm in total according to BMW. It helps when pulling away and accelerating, and smooths Auto Start Stop. It is fed by a 20 Ah 48-volt battery under the luggage floor, recharged by recuperation when braking and decelerating (up to 15 kW per BMW); hence a boot of 415–1,405 litres instead of 470–1,455. The handbook says not to remove that floor, fold its front part up or work on the 48-volt battery; the 12-volt battery is charged with the engine off, through the jump-start points, bonnet open. When coasting, these versions may use no fuel at all. There is nothing to plug in: this is not a plug-in hybrid.

What the service display tracks

The car calculates each due date from how it is used (Condition Based Service) and briefly shows the next date or remaining distance after switching on; details, including statutory inspections, are under Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Service. BMW’s regular maintenance covers engine oil, brake fluid, a vehicle check, air filter, cabin microfilter and spark plugs. Time-based items such as fluid replacement must be updated by the workshop; the X/24 handbook says periods with the battery disconnected are taken into account. The service history is electronic and replaces the printed service booklet. Neither the handbook nor BMW sets a mileage or period: the reference is the date your car displays.

Recalls to check

ADAC lists for the U06 Active Tourer: November 2022 — cars built 07–09/2022: missing parts on the driver’s outer door handle, which could let the door open in a side impact (adapter carrier checked and reworked; 199 cars worldwide); April 2023 — cars built 01/2021–06/2023: outer rear seat belts that may have been trapped by the C-pillar trim during assembly, reducing restraint in a crash (belts checked and reworked); April 2024 — cars built 01/2022–11/2024: a signal fault in the motor position sensor of the integrated braking system can cut hydraulic brake assistance, with ABS and DSC unavailable (software that warns the driver; braking system replaced if a fault is detected); July 2026 — cars built 07/2020–02/2026: wear deposits in the starter relay can cause a short circuit and a fire risk at the starter (starter replaced). Not every car is affected: have a BMW workshop check your VIN.

Prepare the next service

Check the first-registration date and the power on the registration document (BMW: 160 kW total, of which 150 kW from the combustion engine). Note the items and dates shown under Apps › Vehicle › Vehicle status › Service. Give the service advisor the key the car was last driven with: it stores the service data. Ask for 5.25 l of a BMW-approved oil. Then check that the work is entered in the electronic Service History, which a later owner can view.

Maintenance and records

Engine oil — petrol

Due date calculated by CBS

Oil change at the date the car displays; do not run past it. Top-up: BMW Longlife-12 FE, Longlife-17 FE+ or Longlife-19 FE, SAE 0W-20 or 0W-30. If unavailable, up to 1 litre of ACEA C2, C3 or C5. No additives. Only add the quantity the car’s message asks for.

Other maintenance items — petrol

As the service requirement dictates

BMW lists as regular maintenance: brake fluid, a vehicle check to BMW specifications, air filter, cabin microfilter and spark plugs. Each item is triggered by the service requirement the car calculates.

Time-based items

Calendar-based (CBS)

Some maintenance items depend on time, for example replacing operating fluids. The X/24 handbook states that periods with the battery disconnected are taken into account; have the workshop update these items. The handbook gives no period.

48-volt battery (mild hybrid)

No owner intervention

The 48-volt battery sits under the luggage compartment floor: do not remove the floor or fold its front part up, and do not replace or work on this battery. Charge the 12-volt battery only with the engine off, through the jump-start points in the engine compartment, with the bonnet open.

Coolant

Regular check, engine cold

Level correct at the Max mark in the filler neck, engine cold (and climate control off, per the X/24 handbook). BMW recommends coolant to BMW LC-18, mixed 50:50 with water; do not mix additives of different colours. Up to two expansion tanks depending on the drive variant.

Questions about this version (5)

223i or 223i xDrive?

Same engine and same 5.25 l oil change on BMW’s sheets. The xDrive sends power to all four wheels as required, reaches 100 km/h in 6.9 s instead of 7.0 s and uses 7.1–6.5 l/100 km instead of 6.6–6.0. ADAC lists the front-wheel-drive version until 06/2025 and the xDrive beyond.

Why 160 kW on one document and 150 kW on another?

BMW quotes 160 kW in total, 150 kW of it from the combustion engine and up to 14 kW from the electric motor. ADAC gives 160 kW system output and 150 kW nominal power. Your registration document may show either.

Source : [3] [8]

Why does it take more oil than a 220i?

It has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder B48 instead of the 1.5-litre three-cylinder: BMW’s 10/2021 sheet gives 5.25 l at an oil change against 4.5 l. The approved top-up oils are the same.

Which fuel?

The handbook specifies Super RON 95, with RON 91 as the minimum, and up to 25% ethanol (E10, E25). On RON 91 or with more than 10% ethanol, knocking and noticeable changes in driving behaviour and noise are possible, with no effect on engine life according to BMW. Published output and consumption refer to RON 98 E10. Never use metallic additives (manganese, iron).

How should a new car of this version be run in?

Up to 2,000 km, do not exceed 4,500 rpm or 160 km/h, and avoid full load and kick-down; then increase gradually. New tyres need a gentle approach for 300 km, the brakes for about 500 km. The same rules apply after these parts are replaced.
